Chemical peels promise to fade hyperpigmentation, but brown skin responds differently to acids than fair skin does. The wrong peel can deepen pigmentation instead of lifting it. Here is what the science says about which acids work, which concentrations are safe, and why melanin-rich skin needs a different protocol entirely.

Why Brown Skin and Chemical Peels Have a Complicated Relationship

Brown skin produces more melanin, and melanin-producing cells called melanocytes are unusually reactive. Any inflammation, a breakout, a wax burn, even aggressive exfoliation, can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), where the skin darkens as a defensive response. A 2020 review published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology confirmed that Fitzpatrick skin types IV through VI, which include most South Asian skin tones, carry a significantly higher risk of PIH following any procedure that causes epidermal injury. Chemical peels cause controlled epidermal injury. That is the whole mechanism. On fair skin, the recovery from that injury tends to be straightforward. On brown skin, the recovery can produce the very problem you were trying to solve.


This does not mean peels are off the table. It means the acid, the concentration, and the prep protocol matter more than most at-home guides acknowledge.


The Acids That Are Actually Safe for Melanin-Rich Skin

Glycolic acid gets the most marketing attention, but it penetrates deeply and quickly, which raises the inflammation risk on darker skin tones. Mandelic acid is a better starting point. It has a larger molecular size, penetrates more slowly, and has an established track record in dermatological literature for treating pigmentation on brown skin with fewer adverse events. A 2015 study in the Indian Journal of Dermatology compared mandelic acid and glycolic acid peels in patients with melasma on darker skin types and found mandelic acid produced comparable brightening with a lower incidence of post-peel darkening.


Lactic acid sits in the middle, gentler than glycolic, with mild skin-brightening properties. Kojic acid is not technically a peeling agent but is often included in peel formulations specifically to inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme that triggers melanin production. Azelaic acid works similarly and has the added benefit of being anti-inflammatory, which directly counters the PIH risk.



Salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid, is oil-soluble and works well on acne-related pigmentation, which is the most common form of hyperpigmentation on Indian skin. At concentrations of 20 to 30%, salicylic peels have been used clinically in India for decades on darker skin types with a strong safety record when applied correctly.


Concentration and Frequency: Where Most People Go Wrong

The at-home peel market sells products at concentrations ranging from 5% to 40%. The instinct is to start higher and get results faster. On brown skin, this logic consistently backfires. Starting at 5 to 10% glycolic or 10% mandelic and staying there for four to six weeks before increasing is not timidity, it is how you avoid triggering a PIH response that takes six months to resolve.



Frequency matters as much as concentration. Once a week is the ceiling for most at-home acid exfoliation. Using a peel twice a week while also using a daily retinol or vitamin C serum stacks inflammation risk in a way the skin cannot buffer. Pick one active at a time. If you are using a peel weekly, keep the rest of your routine minimal: a gentle cleanser, a barrier-repairing moisturiser, and SPF.


Neutralising the peel correctly is also non-negotiable. Most at-home glycolic and lactic acid peels are self-neutralising at lower concentrations, but if the product instructs you to rinse after a set time, that instruction exists for a reason. Leaving an acid on longer does not improve results on brown skin. It raises the likelihood of a chemical burn, which will cause hyperpigmentation.



Prepping Brown Skin Before a Peel

Dermatologists who treat South Asian patients typically recommend a two-to-four-week prep phase before any peel. This involves applying a low-concentration retinoid or an alpha-hydroxy acid serum nightly to begin normalising cell turnover and thinning the stratum corneum slightly. This makes the subsequent peel more even in its penetration and reduces the chance of patchy results or localised over-penetration.


Sunscreen is not optional at any stage of this process. Hyperpigmentation is a UV-driven condition. Melanin-producing cells are already activated. Sun exposure during a peel cycle can undo weeks of progress in a single afternoon. A broad-spectrum SPF 50 applied every morning, regardless of whether you are going outside, is the single most evidence-backed step in any pigmentation protocol.



If you are using any prescription skin-lightening agents, hydroquinone, tretinoin, or topical azelaic acid, stop them three to five days before a peel session. Layering these on peel day dramatically increases the risk of irritation and rebound pigmentation.


When to Stop and See a Dermatologist

At-home peels have a ceiling. Melasma, which is hormonally driven and sits in the deeper dermal layer, responds poorly to surface-level chemical exfoliation alone. If the pigmentation is symmetrical across both cheeks and the upper lip, the classic melasma pattern common in Indian women during and after pregnancy, an at-home peel will not reach it. A dermatologist can assess whether a professional-grade peel, a prescription topical, or a combination approach is appropriate.


Any peel that causes prolonged redness, visible crusting, or darkening in the days following application should prompt a pause and a consultation. These are not signs the peel is working. They are signs the skin's melanocytes have been triggered.


The real gap in most at-home peel advice is that it was written for a skin type that does not face the same stakes. Brown skin can absolutely benefit from chemical exfoliation, but the margin for error is narrower, and the consequences of ignoring that margin are measured in months, not days.
