That deep red chanderi or electric blue kurta starts fading the moment you wash it wrong. The culprit is almost never the fabric itself, it's the detergent, the water temperature, and how long you leave clothes in the sun. Get these three things right and the colour in your Indian clothes can last for years.

Why Indian Fabrics Lose Colour Faster Than You Think

Most Indian fabrics, chanderi, cotton khadi, silk, bandhani, block-printed cotton, are dyed with reactive or natural dyes that bond well to fibre but are genuinely sensitive to alkaline conditions. Standard detergents sold in India, particularly powder detergents, are highly alkaline, with a pH often between 9 and 11. Reactive dyes begin to break down above pH 8. That is the core problem: the detergent you use to clean the clothes is also stripping their colour with every wash.
Synthetic fabrics like polyester hold colour better because the dye is locked inside the fibre rather than bonded to its surface. Natural fibres, cotton, silk, linen, wool, carry dye on the surface, which is why a cotton kurta in a deep indigo or turmeric yellow will fade faster than a polyester dupatta in the same shade.
Salt in the rinse water helps. One tablespoon of table salt per bucket of cold water in the final rinse tightens the dye bond temporarily. It is not a permanent fix, but it slows the bleed on freshly washed pieces, particularly on bandhani and tie-dye, where the dye sits unevenly across the cloth.

Choosing the Right Detergent

Liquid detergents are almost always gentler than powder on dyed fabric. Powders require more alkaline compounds to dissolve and activate. Look for detergents labelled "colour protect" or "gentle wash", these are formulated at a lower pH, typically between 7 and 8.5. In India, brands like Surf Excel Liquid and Ariel Matic Liquid are closer to neutral than their powder counterparts, though the difference matters most for delicate fabrics, not for a sturdy cotton kurta you wear daily.
For silks, chiffons, and any hand-block-printed piece, a small amount of baby shampoo or a dedicated silk wash works better than any standard detergent. The surfactant load is lower and the pH is close to neutral. Ritha, the dried fruit of Sapindus mukorossi, is a traditional Indian alternative that produces a mild, naturally low-pH lather. It cleans cotton and silk without the alkaline assault of synthetic detergents, and it has been used in Indian households for exactly this purpose for centuries. You can find dried ritha at most kirana stores or dry-goods shops.

One rule that applies regardless of detergent: use less than you think you need. Excess detergent means excess residue, and residue left in fabric after rinsing continues to degrade the dye between washes.

Water Temperature and Soaking Time

Hot water opens the fibre's structure and pulls dye out. Cold water keeps the fibre contracted and the dye in place. For anything with deep colour, a red silk saree, a block-printed cotton kurta, a dark indigo dupatta, cold water is non-negotiable. This applies to both the wash and the rinse.
Soaking is the other variable people underestimate. Leaving a brightly coloured garment to soak for more than ten minutes in detergent water accelerates dye loss significantly. Wash quickly, rinse thoroughly, and get the garment out of the water. A two-minute hand wash in cold water with a small amount of liquid detergent does less damage than a fifteen-minute soak in the same solution.

For machine washing, the delicate or gentle cycle with cold water is the right setting for any Indian fabric you care about. Turn the garment inside out before it goes in. The drum's mechanical action is rougher on the outer surface, and the outer surface is where the colour sits.

How You Dry Clothes Changes the Colour

Direct sunlight is the fastest way to dry clothes. It is also one of the fastest ways to fade them. UV radiation breaks down the chemical bonds in dye molecules, this is photodegradation, and it is irreversible. A deep-coloured garment left in full afternoon sun for three or four hours can lose visible colour in a single drying session.
Dry coloured clothes in shade, or in indirect morning light before 9 a.m., when UV intensity is lower. Turn them inside out so the inner face takes whatever UV exposure there is. White and light-coloured clothes can go in full sun, the bleaching effect is useful there. Dark and saturated colours cannot.

In Indian summers, clothes dry in shade within two to three hours anyway. The sun is not necessary for speed. It is only necessary if you want the fabric to fade.

Storing Clothes So the Colour Holds Between Wears

Colour loss is not only a washing problem. Storing damp clothes, even slightly damp, encourages mildew, and mildew leaves permanent grey or brown patches that look like fading but are biological damage. Air clothes completely before folding them away.
Prolonged pressure from tight folding can create crease lines that, over time, show as lighter streaks on dark fabric, particularly on silk and on block-printed cotton where the dye sits on the surface rather than through the weave. Store heavily dyed pieces loosely rolled in muslin rather than folded flat.
Direct contact with cedar balls or naphthalene mothballs can bleach fabric at the point of contact. Keep them in a separate cloth pouch, not touching the garment.
The colour in a well-made Indian fabric is not fragile by nature. Reactive dyes on cotton and natural dyes on silk are designed to last. What shortens their life is consistent exposure to conditions they were never built for: hot water, high-alkaline detergent, and hours of direct sun. Adjust those three, and a kurta you bought last season can still look like it did on the day you brought it home two years from now.
