Your vitamin C serum turning orange isn't a sign it's working, it means the antioxidant has already broken down. Indian humidity accelerates oxidation faster than most formulations are built to handle. Here's how to read the discolouration, understand what's happening to the serum's stability, and switch to a routine that actually survives the climate.

What oxidation actually does to vitamin C

Ascorbic acid, the active form of vitamin C in most serums, is chemically unstable. When it reacts with oxygen, it converts first into dehydroascorbic acid and then into diketogulonic acid, a compound with no brightening activity, no collagen-stimulating effect, and no antioxidant function. The serum still looks like a serum. It still smells faintly of citrus. But the ingredient doing the work is gone.


The colour change is the visible marker of that conversion. A fresh L-ascorbic acid serum is clear to very pale yellow. As it oxidises, it moves through deeper yellow, then orange, then amber-brown. Each shade shift represents a measurable drop in potency. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology confirmed that L-ascorbic acid at concentrations of 10 to 20% degrades significantly within weeks of exposure to light and air, well before the printed expiry date on the bottle.

Why Indian humidity speeds up the breakdown

Oxidation in vitamin C serums is driven by three variables: heat, light, and moisture. India delivers all three at scale. Coastal cities like Mumbai and Chennai regularly sit above 80% relative humidity for months. Inland cities like Hyderabad and Bengaluru cross that threshold during the monsoon. Even Delhi, which is drier in winter, turns humid enough in July and August to accelerate breakdown in any bottle that isn't airtight.


Moisture matters because water molecules facilitate the oxidation reaction. A serum stored in a bathroom cabinet, which cycles through steam from showers and then dry air from the AC, is being exposed to repeated humidity spikes. Each spike pushes the reaction forward. The formulation's preservative system, designed for stable storage conditions, cannot compensate for that kind of repeated thermal and humidity cycling.


Most vitamin C serums sold globally are formulated and stability-tested in European or North American lab conditions, where humidity rarely exceeds 50 to 60%. The stability data on the packaging reflects those conditions, not a Mumbai July.

How to spot a serum that's already gone

Three checks, in order of reliability:



1. Colour. Clear or pale yellow is fine. Anything orange or darker is degraded. Do not use it expecting brightening results, the active is no longer present in useful form.


2. Smell. Fresh ascorbic acid serums have a faint, slightly sour or citrus-adjacent scent. A rancid, metallic, or sharply acidic smell that wasn't there when you opened the bottle means the breakdown is advanced.



3. Texture change. Some oxidised serums become slightly sticky or develop a different viscosity. This is formulation-dependent, so it's the least reliable of the three, but if colour and smell have also changed, texture confirms it.


A serum that has only shifted to a deeper yellow may still retain partial potency. One that has gone orange has lost enough activity that continuing to use it is not doing what you bought it to do.

What to change: formulation, storage, and routine

Switch formulation type. L-ascorbic acid is the most potent but least stable form. Ascorbyl glucoside, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, and ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate are derivative forms that are significantly more stable in humidity. They convert to active ascorbic acid on the skin. The trade-off is that the conversion is partial, so the effective concentration is lower, but a stable derivative at 10% outperforms a degraded L-ascorbic acid serum at 20%.



Packaging matters more than most labels admit. Airless pump bottles dramatically reduce oxygen exposure compared to dropper bottles, which draw air back in with every use. Dark or opaque glass slows light-driven degradation. If your current serum comes in a clear dropper bottle, it is the worst possible format for Indian storage conditions.


Store in the refrigerator, not the bathroom. The fridge maintains a stable low temperature and low humidity, exactly the opposite of a bathroom cabinet. A cool, dark drawer away from the kitchen also works. The bathroom is the single worst room in an Indian home for vitamin C storage.



Apply it immediately after opening your routine, on dry skin, before any water-based products. Vitamin C absorbs best at a low skin pH, and layering it under a hydrating toner or essence before it has had time to absorb dilutes the formulation and raises the pH at the surface, reducing penetration.


Buy smaller bottles. A 15ml bottle used within six weeks degrades less than a 30ml bottle used over four months. The cost-per-ml is higher, but the cost-per-effective-dose is lower.
