Why Henna Coats Hair Instead of Penetrating It and What That Means for Chemical Colouring

Henna doesn't colour hair the way a chemical dye does. It wraps each strand in a coating of lawsone molecules, sitting on the surface rather than penetrating the cortex. That difference has real consequences the next time you reach for a box of colour, consequences most women discover only after the damage is already done.

What the Coating Actually Does to the Strand

Lawsone, the active molecule in henna, has a molecular weight too large to pass through the cuticle layer of a hair strand. Instead it binds to the keratin proteins on the outside of the shaft, forming a physical coating that builds up with every application.


The cuticle is a series of overlapping scales, like roof tiles. A chemical dye works by lifting those scales open, usually with ammonia, and depositing pigment molecules inside the cortex. Henna cannot do this. Its lawsone molecules attach to the outermost keratin layer and harden there. The colour sits on the surface rather than inside the strand.


That coating does offer real benefits. It adds weight and thickness to fine hair, reduces frizz, and gives strands a shine that looks healthy in direct sunlight. Many women with thin hair notice their braid feels denser after three or four henna applications. The coating is real and it accumulates.

Why Chemical Dye Cannot Reach the Cortex Through Henna

When you apply a chemical dye over henna-coated hair, the ammonia still tries to lift the cuticle. But the henna barrier has partially sealed those scales. The dye molecules find the surface occupied. Some colour deposits unevenly, some doesn't deposit at all, and the result is patchy, darker in sections where henna had worn thinner, lighter or greenish where the coating was thick.


Lightening henna-coated hair is the most problematic case. Bleach needs to penetrate the cortex to oxidise the melanin inside. With the coating acting as a barrier, bleach sits on the surface longer, overprocessing the outer layer while failing to reach the melanin underneath. The strand can turn orange or snap, and the damage is often irreversible.



Going darker is more forgiving but still unreliable. A dark chemical colour may appear to take, but it sits on top of the henna layer rather than inside the cortex. It fades faster, sometimes within two to three washes, and it fades unevenly.

The Strand Test Before You Book That Appointment

Before committing to any chemical colour service on henna-treated hair, a strand test is not optional. Cut a small section from an inconspicuous area, the nape works well, and apply your intended colour or bleach to that section alone. Leave it for the full development time, then rinse and dry it. The result on that strand is exactly what will happen across your entire head.


A strand test also tells you how much henna coating is still present. Hair that has been hennaed once and grown out significantly will behave differently from hair that has been hennaed monthly for two years. The strand test is the only reliable way to know which situation you're actually in.

Your Real Options for Transitioning Away from Henna

If you want to move to chemical colour, three paths exist, none of them fast.



The first is to grow it out. New growth from the roots carries no henna coating. Over time, you trim the hennaed ends and work with the uncoated new hair. This takes patience measured in months, not weeks.


The second is protein treatments and clarifying. Some colourists use a protein filler or a clarifying wash to partially reduce the henna coating before applying chemical dye. This improves colour uptake but does not remove the coating entirely. The result is better than applying colour straight over henna, but not equivalent to virgin hair.



The third is to accept the two-texture reality. Some women choose to colour only their new growth while maintaining the hennaed length, living with two different colour results until the hennaed hair is eventually cut away. This is the lowest-damage approach.


What does not work: colour removers. These are formulated to extract artificial pigment from inside the cortex. Henna's lawsone is bound to the outside of the strand, so colour removers have no mechanism to reach it.



The henna coating that makes your hair feel thicker and shinier is the same coating that makes the colourist's job complicated later. Both effects come from the same molecular fact, lawsone binds outside, not inside. Understanding that one fact changes every decision you make about your hair from the first henna application onward, because the coating you build today is the constraint you'll manage tomorrow.
