Zardozi Once Used Real Gold Wire: What Modern Zari Contains and How to Test Authentic Fabric

Real zardozi embroidery once used gold wire so heavy it could be melted down and sold. Modern zari fabric is almost never gold. It's copper, polyester, or both, coated to look the part. Before you pay a premium for what a label calls authentic zardozi work, here's what the thread actually contains and three tests you can run at home.

What Real Zardozi Gold Wire Actually Was

The gold wire in Mughal-era zardozi was not decorative in the way we use that word now. It was currency. Artisans in Lucknow and Agra worked with badla, flattened strips of real gold or silver wound around a silk core, and the finished garment held its metal value. Noblewomen could, and did, have embroidered dupattas unpicked and the metal sold. The wire was called kalabattu when it was pure silver, and the gold-alloy version sat above it in both weight and cost. A heavily worked sherwani from the 17th century could carry several tolas of actual metal in its surface alone.


The craft required a specific tool, the ari, a hooked needle, and a frame called the karchob, over which fabric was stretched flat. The embroiderer pushed the ari through from below, catching the metal wire laid on top and pulling it into loops. The physical weight of the work was part of its status signal. You felt the garment before you saw it.


What Modern Zari Is Made Of

The shift away from real metal happened in two stages. After independence, the government regulated gold use in textiles to conserve foreign exchange, and craftsmen switched to silver-coated copper wire. That version, still called real zari in trade, tarnishes over time as the silver oxidises, which is why older silk saris go grey-green at the border if stored badly.


The second shift was the arrival of metallic polyester thread, now the dominant material in what is sold as zari across most of the market. This thread is a plastic film, usually a polyester base, with aluminium coating applied to give it shine. It does not tarnish. It does not conduct heat. It weighs almost nothing. It is also substantially cheaper, which is why a Banarasi-style sari that would have cost a craftsman weeks of work with real metal can now be produced in a power loom in days.



The Varanasi Silk Fabric Geographical Indication tag, granted in 2009, was meant to protect authentic handwoven Banarasi silk with real zari. In practice, the market still runs on buyer ignorance. Shops use the words zardozi and zari interchangeably with no legal consequence, because neither word is itself a protected term. What matters is whether the specific product carries its GI certification, and most do not.

Three Tests You Can Run Before You Buy

None of these require a lab.




1. The burn test. Pull a single thread from an inconspicuous seam, the inner hem, the selvedge. Hold it with a pair of tweezers and bring it to a flame. Real silver-coated copper wire will not burn. It may discolour, but the metal stays intact and the thread holds its shape. Metallic polyester burns with a small orange flame, melts into a hard bead, and smells of plastic. This is the most reliable test and takes thirty seconds.


2. The acid test. A drop of nitric acid on real silver turns it grey-green. On copper, it turns blue-green. Jewellers' shops will often do this for you if you bring a thread. This is overkill for most purchases, but useful if you are buying something with a significant price tag and a claim of pure silver zari.



3. The weight and drape test. Real metal embroidery has mass. Pick up the garment and hold it by the embroidered section. Fabric with genuine badla or silver-copper zari pulls downward with a distinctly different hand than fabric with polyester thread. This is not definitive on its own, but combined with the burn test, it narrows the field considerably. A heavily embroidered dupatta in real zardozi work will feel like it has something to say for itself.

What Certifications and Labels Actually Tell You

The Handloom Mark, issued by the Ministry of Textiles, certifies that a product was woven on a handloom. It says nothing about the zari content. The Silk Mark, issued by the Central Silk Board, certifies natural silk fibre. Again, it does not certify metal content. The GI tag for Banarasi silk covers the weaving tradition and region of origin, it does not independently verify whether the zari used is real metal or polyester film.


The only document that directly addresses metal content is the zari purity certificate issued by the Zari Testing and Quality Certification Centre in Surat. Surat produces the majority of India's zari, and the centre tests thread composition. If a seller claims the zari is real silver-coated copper, ask for this certificate. Most cannot produce it. That absence is itself information.



Lucknow's Chikankari gets a GI tag that covers embroidery technique, not thread material. Zardozi done in Lucknow today spans everything from real gold-alloy wire on bridal pieces made to order, to metallic polyester on ready-to-wear kurtas sold in tourist markets. The word zardozi on a price tag is a style description, not a material guarantee.


The thread that once funded households, that artisans weighed on scales before they stitched, now comes in bulk spools from factories and costs less per metre than the fabric it decorates. Knowing what you are actually buying does not make the polyester version less beautiful, but it changes what you are paying for, and it changes what you should pay.
