The Kitchen Counter or Shelf Above the Stove
A 2019 study published in the journal Medicina found that paracetamol tablets stored at 40°C lost measurable potency within weeks, still well within their printed shelf life. The average Indian kitchen, with a gas stove running twice a day, routinely hits that temperature. Strips of paracetamol, antacids, and digestive tablets sit on kitchen shelves because that is where people remember to take them. The logic is practical. The chemistry is not. Heat accelerates the molecular breakdown of most solid-dose drugs. The expiry date printed on the strip assumes storage between 15°C and 25°C, the standard pharmaceutical benchmark. A kitchen shelf near a flame is nowhere close.
The Bathroom Cabinet
Humidity is the second major driver of drug degradation, and the Indian bathroom, especially during monsoon months, is among the most humid rooms in the house. Moisture causes tablets to absorb water, which breaks down the active compound and, in coated tablets, destroys the protective layer that controls how the drug is released. The bathroom cabinet persists as a storage spot because the name "medicine cabinet" is almost always associated with a bathroom in popular imagination. Capsules are especially vulnerable here. Hygroscopic drugs like aspirin and certain antibiotics can begin to degrade within days of repeated humidity exposure.
The Car Glove Compartment
Cars parked in the sun in Indian cities can reach interior temperatures of 60°C to 70°C in summer. The glove compartment sits directly in that heat. People keep medicines in the car for emergencies, a strip of Crocin, antacids, motion-sickness tablets, and the logic is sound. But temperature cycling, the repeated shift from extreme heat to air-conditioned cool, is particularly destructive to drug stability. Nitroglycerin tablets used for cardiac emergencies are among the most temperature-sensitive; their potency can drop by half within days of heat exposure. Less critical drugs degrade more slowly, but the process begins the first time the car bakes in an afternoon sun.
The Windowsill
Direct sunlight is a separate degradation pathway from heat, though the two usually arrive together. UV radiation breaks down photosensitive drugs at the molecular level. Tetracycline antibiotics, certain antihistamines, and most liquid suspensions are particularly vulnerable. Indian households often place medicines on windowsills simply because the light makes them easy to spot. A strip of tablets left in direct sun for a few hours a day can lose a significant portion of its active compound within weeks. The amber bottles that pharmacies use for liquid medicines exist precisely because light is a known threat, but the bottle only works if it stays out of direct sun.
Near the Refrigerator's External Coils or on Top of the Fridge
The top of the refrigerator and the area around its external coils generate consistent, dry heat. It is a counterintuitive spot because the fridge itself is cold, but the motor and coils radiate warmth continuously. Many Indian kitchens place medicines on top of the refrigerator because it is a flat, accessible surface away from the stove. The heat output from a standard refrigerator is modest, typically 30°C to 40°C at the surface, but sustained exposure over months accelerates the breakdown of temperature-sensitive drugs in the same way a kitchen shelf does. Insulin and certain probiotics that actually require refrigeration are sometimes stored here by mistake, which is a separate and more immediate problem.
The Puja Room Shelf
Incense smoke contains particulate matter and volatile organic compounds. Diyas and candles raise the ambient temperature of a small room noticeably. The puja room is a common storage spot in many households, partly because it is a dedicated shelf that family members pass daily, and partly because medicines for elderly relatives are sometimes placed near the space where they pray. The combination of smoke, heat from lamps, and fluctuating temperature makes the puja room a poor storage environment for most drugs. Medicines stored in this space are exposed to the same degradation triggers as the kitchen, heat and airborne contaminants, without the obvious visual cue of a gas flame nearby.
The expiry date on a medicine strip is a manufacturer's promise, but it comes with a condition buried in fine print: store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. All six of these common spots violate at least one of those three conditions. The date does not lie, the storage does. A drug that has been through months of kitchen heat or bathroom humidity may look identical to an intact one and still deliver a fraction of the intended dose, which is the specific failure that is hardest to detect and easiest to prevent.
