Seasonal allergies are miserable enough without your diet making them worse. Certain foods cross-react with pollen or flood your body with histamine, turning a manageable sneeze into a week of misery. If your allergy symptoms spike after meals, these eight foods are the most likely culprits, and cutting them at the right time can make a measurable difference.

Apples, Peaches, and Stone Fruits

Raw apples, peaches, cherries, and plums contain proteins that closely resemble birch pollen. When your immune system is already on high alert during allergy season, it mistakes these fruit proteins for the same threat. The result is oral allergy syndrome, a tingling or swelling in the mouth and throat that begins within minutes of eating. A 2010 study published in the journal Allergy found that oral allergy syndrome affects up to 70% of people with birch pollen sensitivity. Cooking the fruit breaks down the cross-reactive proteins, so a stewed peach won't cause the same reaction a raw one does.


Tomatoes

Tomatoes sit at the intersection of two problems. They are naturally high in histamine and they cross-react with grass pollen. During grass pollen season, typically March through June across most of India's northern plains, eating tomatoes raw can amplify sneezing, itchy eyes, and nasal congestion well beyond what pollen exposure alone would cause. This matters because tomatoes appear in almost every Indian meal in some form: dal tadka, sabzi, chutney, curry base. Switching to cooked tomatoes reduces, but does not eliminate, the histamine load.


Alcohol

Alcohol blocks the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO), which the body uses to break down histamine. When DAO activity drops, histamine from food and from your own immune response accumulates faster. Wine is a particular problem: it contains both alcohol and naturally occurring histamine from the fermentation process. Even one glass during peak allergy season can extend symptoms by hours. Beer, particularly wheat beer, adds another layer, it contains yeast proteins that cross-react with mould spores, a common autumn allergen.


Celery and Carrots

Both vegetables share structural proteins with mugwort pollen and, to a lesser degree, birch pollen. Raw celery is one of the more potent oral allergy syndrome triggers in people with multiple pollen sensitivities. Carrots are less reactive but still worth watching if symptoms are severe. The cross-reactivity runs in one direction: cooked versions are generally safe. The issue is the raw crunch that makes both vegetables common in salads and juicing, habits that tend to increase exactly when people are trying to eat healthily through the allergy season.



Spices, Especially Coriander and Cumin

This one is uncomfortable for an Indian kitchen. Coriander, cumin, fennel, and fenugreek all belong to the Apiaceae family, the same botanical group as celery. In people sensitive to mugwort or grass pollen, these spices can trigger oral allergy syndrome or worsen systemic inflammation. Fresh coriander leaves are more reactive than dried powder, but neither is entirely safe at high doses during peak season. This does not mean eliminating these spices, it means being alert when symptoms spike after a heavily spiced meal and reducing fresh herb garnishes during the worst weeks.


Dairy Products

Dairy does not cause allergies in the immunological sense of cross-reacting with pollen. What it does is thicken mucus secretions, which makes congestion harder to clear when your nasal passages are already inflamed. Some researchers also point to casein, the primary protein in milk, as a mild inflammatory trigger in people with existing immune activation. During allergy season, the congestion dairy worsens can feel indistinguishable from the allergy itself. Full-fat milk and paneer are the biggest contributors; fermented dairy like curd has a lower casein load and is generally better tolerated.



Wheat and Gluten-Containing Foods

Wheat cross-reacts with grass pollen, both contain similar lipid transfer proteins. For people with grass pollen allergy, eating wheat during pollen season can sustain a low-grade inflammatory state that keeps immune reactivity elevated. This is separate from coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity. The mechanism is pollen-food allergy syndrome, and it means the immune system treats wheat proteins as an extension of the same threat it's fighting outside. Rotis and bread are not going anywhere, but reducing wheat-heavy meals at breakfast, when pollen counts are typically highest, is a practical adjustment.


Nuts, Particularly Walnuts and Hazelnuts

Walnuts and hazelnuts cross-react strongly with birch pollen. In people with tree pollen sensitivity, raw walnuts can cause immediate oral allergy syndrome symptoms: lip tingling, throat itch, mild swelling. Peanuts, which are legumes rather than tree nuts, carry a different protein profile and are less likely to cross-react with pollen, though they are among the most common food allergens independently. Roasting deactivates some of the cross-reactive proteins in walnuts and hazelnuts, making roasted versions safer during peak tree pollen season than raw ones straight from the packet.
