As energy levels fluctuate, hunger signals are sent to the brain to prompt eating.
However, hunger isn’t solely about your body needing energy. Several factors can influence your appetite and cause you to feel hungry all the time, even when you might not actually need more calories. Constant hunger can be a sign that your body is giving you to recognise what's missing and fulfill it's need. this constant hunger or passing cravings to eat something all the day doesn't really mean you're just hungry
but it can be due lack of protein in your body and in your diet.
One of the major causes of constant hunger is lack of protein in body. Protein is the most major essential nutrient required by living beings to stay alive. It is required to fulfill each and every basic functions that we do by moving our body. even every single cell in our body needs protein to do its job.
But deficiency of protein is very common in India. survey reports and data informs that almost 80% of Indian population lack in their daily requirement of protein and 90% of the population isn't even aware of their daily requirement of protein.
Deficiency of protein can cause major health issues like muscle weakness, muscle loss, constant body pain, skin problems, Hair loss, impaired immunity and increased stress. These are very common issues that most of us face in our daily lives, but never recognise the factor behind the cause can be less protein consumption.

To fulfill the requirements of your body you need to first understand what your body needs. In very brief I will let you know how your protein is formed and which component of protein you might be lacking in your diet?
Protein is basically formed by combination of 20 amino acids in which 11 of these can be produced by body but left 9 can't be produced by your body, they need to be obtained through Diet.
Foods that contain these ( amino acids are considered complete proteins.
but sources of these complete protein foods are very limited, specially for vegetarians. some major sources of complete protein (Non-Vegetarian) foods includes Poultry, Fish, Meat and ( vegetarian) food sources such as Tofu, Dairy products, quinoa, Buckwheat etc.
Unlike Carbohydrates, Protein can't be stored in body so it needs to be taken on regular basis to keep fulfilling the requirement.
However it's easier to get protein through Non-vegetarian diet but In changing times most people are turning towards vegetarian or vegan diet which is usually low in protein amount. So, Not only our body is protein deficient but the food we eat is also very low in protein. The meal that average Indians consume contains mostly carbohydrate and very less amount of protein.
Although protein intake depends on various factors including age and Body weight, but on average an adult should consume at least 55 to 70 grams of protein daily. An individual with a normal, usual lifestyle should consume at least 0.75 grams to 0.85grams of protein per kg of heir body weight But the average protein intake of an Indian adult is around 0.5-0.6 grams per kg of their body weight which is almost around 40grams of protein per day.
Also Some Other Reasons Of Constant Cravings Or Excessive Hunger Can Be:
"Ghrelin" also known as hunger hormone, is the hormone which causes the feeling of hunger when our stomach does not have work to do. But this can be released in stressful situations as well causing cravings to comfort the brain. this is called as comfort eating.
Sleep deprivation:- Deprivation of sleep also causes excessive hunger as less sleep can alter many hormone levels in body which in turn can ask body for food and more sugary or salty food to uplift the mood. sleep deprivation can also lead to insulin resistance which can cause diabetes.
Lifestyle changes and more digital interaction is commonly affecting sleep cycle and causing sleep deprivation in adults or even children.
Increased exercise:- More amount of physical activity or exercise will demand more food to regain it's energy level. More physical activity will burn more calories increasing the body requirement but this is normal you just need to increase your calory intake as per your requirement by consuming more fiber and protein rich diet.
Consuming More Processed foods:-Highly processed foods, especially those high in sugar or refined carbs, can lead to rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar, causing increased hunger and cravings.
Fiber less Diet:- Less fibre in diet is also a major reason of emptying stomach more fast as fibre takes time in digestion giving a feeling of satiety and feeling fuller for longer time. Fibre helps in digestion as well.
Not Drinking Enough Water:- Drinking less amount of water can cause many health issues, excessive hunger is just one of them. people often misunderstand the feeling of thirst as feeling of hunger which causes unnecessary eating and less water consumption. Also water is a natural appetite suppressant so it can suppress frequent cravings.
What Can Be Done To Stop Persistent Cravings And Excessive Hunger?
Physical Activity
- Ensure regular intake of all 9 essential amino acids:

- Snack Smartly: replace processed foods and snacks with healthier snack options such as nuts, Makhana, Dry fruits and fruits.
- Limit Processed Foods: Limiting highly processed foods, those high in sugar, salt or refined carbs, can keep blood sugar stable and will prevent sudden weakness, cravings and urge to eat something.
- Reduce Stress: Do relaxation and calming exercises to keep yourself stable and to keep Ghrelin in level. This will help you to avoid unnecessary Cravings and urge to get Comfort food.
- Last but not the least, follow a regular eating schedule, don't skip meals and keep your protein on check.
