A single Ganesh Chaturthi procession or Navratri night can push noise levels past 110 decibels, enough to cause lasting hearing damage before the festivities end. Tinnitus, muffled sound, and permanent ear injury are not rare outcomes. Here is what that festival loudness does to your ears, and what protection actually helps.

The decibels at a dhol pathak are not a metaphor for loudness

A dhol played at close range during a procession registers between 100 and 120 decibels. The WHO recommends no more than 85 decibels for eight hours of continuous exposure, and cuts that safe window to under two minutes at 110 decibels. A Ganesh Chaturthi procession in Mumbai or a Navratri garba venue with stacked festival loudspeakers routinely crosses that threshold within the first few minutes. The ear does not get a warning before damage begins.
A 2019 study published in the Indian Journal of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery measured sound levels at public festival events across three Indian cities and found peak levels exceeding 115 decibels at multiple sites, with crowd members standing within two to five metres of dhol players for sustained periods. At those distances, the cochlear hair cells, the ones that convert sound into electrical signals the brain reads, begin to sustain injury that does not repair itself.

What the ear is actually doing during one procession

The cochlea contains roughly 15,000 hair cells. They do not regenerate in humans. Exposure to loud noise above safe thresholds causes two types of damage: temporary threshold shift, where hearing dulls for hours after the event, and permanent threshold shift, where some of that dulling never reverses. The distinction matters because temporary threshold shift feels like recovery. The ringing fades, the muffling clears, and the ear seems fine by the next morning. What that recovery conceals is that a fraction of the hair cells did not recover, they died. Each festival evening without protection removes another fraction.
The loudspeakers mounted on trucks at processions add a second layer of risk. Unlike the dhol, which produces a sharp percussive peak, festival loudspeakers sustain high decibels across a wider frequency range for longer durations. The combination of sustained loudness from speakers and the sharp peaks from dhols creates a pattern of exposure that is more damaging than either source alone.

Tinnitus after the festival is not nothing

Tinnitus, the ringing, buzzing, or hissing that persists after loud noise exposure, is the ear's signal that something went wrong. Many people dismiss it as a temporary side effect of a good night. It can be. For a significant portion, it is not. The American Tinnitus Association estimates that roughly 25 percent of people who experience noise-induced tinnitus go on to have it chronically. In India, where festival noise exposure is seasonal but intense and repeated year after year across Diwali, Navratri, Holi, and procession seasons, cumulative damage compounds across decades.

The ringing itself is not the injury, it is a symptom of the injury already done. Treating tinnitus after the fact is difficult. There is no established pharmacological cure. Management options exist, but the hair cells that caused it are gone.

Who absorbs the most damage

Children have smaller ear canals, which can amplify incoming sound pressure. A child standing beside a dhol player absorbs a higher effective decibel load than an adult at the same distance. Elderly adults with existing age-related hearing loss are pushed further into impairment with each exposure. Musicians in dhol pathaks, who play for the entire duration of a procession, sometimes two to four hours, accumulate exposure that far exceeds what any occupational safety standard in India permits for industrial workers.
People who attend multiple festival events across a season without ear protection are not making a series of independent choices. Each exposure adds to a total that the cochlea is counting even when the person is not.

What protection actually works in a crowd

Foam earplugs rated at NRR 29 or higher reduce effective exposure by roughly 14 to 15 decibels in real-world conditions, enough to bring a 115-decibel environment down to a safer range. They cost between ten and thirty rupees at most pharmacies. Custom-moulded musician's earplugs, available from audiologists, attenuate evenly across frequencies, which means they reduce loudness without distorting speech or music, a meaningful difference for someone who wants to hear the dhol, not just survive it.

Distance is the other variable. Sound intensity drops with the square of distance from the source. Moving five metres further from a dhol player or a speaker stack reduces exposure significantly. At a garba or procession, this is often possible with a small repositioning that most people do not think to make.
The ears that walk into a festival and the ears that walk out are not in the same condition. The gap between them is small on any single evening. Across a lifetime of festival seasons without protection, it is the difference between hearing clearly at sixty and asking people to repeat themselves at fifty.
