Cold air is not the only thing worsening your sinusitis this winter. From dry indoor air that strips your mucus lining to allergens hiding in your bedding, the real triggers are inside your home. If your congestion returns the moment temperatures drop, these six overlooked habits are almost certainly making it worse.

Sleeping with a ceiling fan on all night

Most Indians keep the ceiling fan running through winter nights out of habit, or because the room feels stuffy. The fan does not cool the air significantly in December, but it does dry it out, and dry air is one of the most consistent sinusitis aggravators on record. A 2019 study published in the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology found that low indoor humidity significantly impaired mucociliary clearance, the process by which the mucus lining of your sinuses traps and expels allergens and bacteria. When that lining dries out, it cracks, inflammation follows, and the congestion that wakes you at 3 a.m. is the direct result. Turn the fan off, or drop it to its lowest setting. If the room still feels close, crack a window rather than circulate dry air all night.

Ignoring indoor allergens in winter bedding

Woollen blankets and heavy quilts come out of storage in October and go straight onto the bed without washing. Inside those folds: dust mites, mould spores, and whatever allergens settled in during eight months of storage. Dust mites thrive in temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius, exactly the range of an Indian winter bedroom. Their waste particles are among the most potent triggers of sinus inflammation known to allergists. Wash heavy bedding in hot water before first use each season. If the blanket cannot be machine-washed, air it in direct afternoon sunlight for at least four hours, which reduces mite populations measurably.

Over-relying on nasal decongestant sprays

Oxymetazoline sprays, sold under brand names like Otrivin and Nasivion across Indian pharmacies, work fast. That is the problem. Used for more than three consecutive days, they cause rebound congestion, a condition called rhinitis medicamentosa, in which the nasal passages swell worse than before the spray was used. The mucus membranes become dependent on the drug to stay open. Many people interpret this rebound swelling as their sinusitis worsening and use more spray, which deepens the cycle. The spray is appropriate for acute short-term relief. For chronic winter sinusitis, a saline rinse with a neti pot is slower but does not carry this rebound risk.

Drinking less water because you feel less thirsty

Thirst sensation drops in cold weather. This is well established in exercise physiology, a 2014 review in the Journal of Athletic Training noted that cold-weather fluid intake routinely falls below physiological need because the thirst mechanism is blunted by cold. For sinusitis, this matters because mucus viscosity is directly tied to hydration. Thick, dehydrated mucus does not drain properly from the sinus cavities. It pools, stagnates, and becomes a growth medium for bacteria. The sinuses drain best when mucus stays thin and mobile. Warm fluids help on both counts: they hydrate and the steam loosens congestion. Adrak chai, rasam, and plain hot water with lemon all serve the same mechanical function here.

Heating the room with a closed gas stove or room heater

Unvented gas heaters and kerosene room heaters, still common in North Indian homes during peak winter, release nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter into the air. A 2020 study in Environmental Health Perspectives linked indoor nitrogen dioxide exposure to increased upper respiratory inflammation and worsened sinus symptoms in adults with pre-existing rhinitis. Even electric room heaters without a humidifier attached drop indoor humidity to levels that impair the mucus lining within a few hours. If you use a room heater, place a shallow bowl of water near it. The evaporation adds moisture back into the air without any equipment investment.

Skipping the morning nasal rinse because it feels cold

A saline nasal rinse in winter feels unpleasant. The water is cold, the bathroom is cold, and the instinct is to skip it. But the morning rinse mechanically clears the allergens, dust, and dried mucus that accumulated overnight, the exact material that triggers inflammation once the day's breathing begins. Research published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews confirmed that saline nasal irrigation reduces symptom severity in chronic sinusitis more reliably than antihistamines alone. Use lukewarm water with a quarter teaspoon of non-iodised salt. The temperature makes the process tolerable and does not reduce effectiveness. Two minutes in the morning changes the trajectory of the entire day's breathing.

Winter sinusitis is not one problem with one cause. It is a cluster of small, daily decisions, the fan setting, the unwashed quilt, the spray used one day too many, the water not drunk, each of which nudges the sinus environment slightly further from functional. No single change resolves it. But the six triggers above share a common mechanism: they all compromise either the moisture level or the drainage capacity of the mucus lining. Fix those two things, consistently, and the season becomes manageable.
