What Your Resting Heart Rate Reveals About Your Fitness Level and Cardiovascular Health
The number most people ignore every morning
Your resting heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute when you are completely at rest. The American Heart Association places the normal adult range at 60 to 100 beats per minute, but that range is wide enough to hide meaningful differences. A person at 98 bpm and a person at 62 bpm are both "normal", their cardiovascular systems are doing very different amounts of work.

Dehydration raises resting heart rate because the blood becomes more viscous and the heart must beat faster to maintain circulation. A drop in blood volume from inadequate water intake of even two percent can push the rate up by five to eight beats per minute. Many wearable devices measure resting heart rate through the night using photoplethysmography sensors. The overnight average is generally more accurate than a morning wrist check because it is taken across hours rather than minutes. The data is only useful if you check it consistently and know your own baseline.
Athletes use resting heart rate as a recovery marker. If the morning rate is elevated after a hard training day, the body has not fully recovered. Training hard on that day compounds fatigue rather than building fitness.
