Infrared saunas heat your body directly without the punishing steam humidity most Indians associate with a sauna. The difference in how each type triggers sweating, cardiovascular response, and detoxification is not cosmetic, it changes who benefits, who should be cautious, and whether the wellness claims actually hold up under scrutiny.

Two very different kinds of heat

A traditional steam sauna heats the air around you to 80 to 100°C. Your body responds to that hot air by sweating to cool itself down. An infrared sauna runs at 50 to 65°C but uses infrared light wavelengths to heat your body's tissue directly, bypassing the ambient air almost entirely. The room feels milder. The physiological demand on your body is not.This distinction matters because the mechanism drives the outcome. Steam saunas create a cardiovascular stress response primarily through skin-surface heat. Infrared penetrates 4 to 5 centimetres into soft tissue, which means the core temperature rises faster relative to the air temperature the person is sitting in. For someone unaccustomed to intense heat, which describes a large share of first-time sauna users in India, this is a meaningful difference in how the body is being worked.

What the research actually shows

A 2018 study published in Complementary Medicine Research followed 45 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome over eight weeks of infrared sauna use. Researchers recorded significant reductions in fatigue scores and improvements in mood, alongside modest drops in resting heart rate. A separate body of research from Jari Laukkanen's team at the University of Eastern Finland, tracking over 2,300 middle-aged men across two decades, found that frequent sauna use (four to seven sessions per week) correlated with a 50% lower risk of fatal cardiovascular events. That research used traditional Finnish steam saunas, not infrared. The cardiovascular benefit is not automatically transferable between the two types.Infrared saunas have their own evidence base, but it is narrower. Studies from the Waon therapy protocol developed in Japan show measurable improvements in endothelial function and reduced arterial stiffness in patients with mild congestive heart failure. Both conditions affect how the body handles heat stress. Hypertensive individuals on calcium channel blockers or diuretics face a compounded dehydration risk in any sauna environment. The lower ambient temperature of an infrared sauna does not eliminate this risk; it reduces the surface discomfort while the core thermal load continues.Anyone with a cardiac condition should consult a physician before using either sauna type. Pregnant women, people with multiple sclerosis, and those with active fever are standard contraindications across both. The infrared sauna's gentler feel has led some users to extend sessions beyond the recommended 20 to 30 minutes, which is where the risk actually increases, not in the first ten minutes when the body is still adjusting.

Practical differences for an Indian context

Steam rooms have been part of Indian wellness infrastructure for decades, attached to gyms, hotels, and Ayurvedic treatment centres. Infrared saunas are newer arrivals, mostly found in premium urban wellness studios in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi, with per-session pricing that puts them out of reach for most users.The heat tolerance question is also worth examining honestly. Many Indians live in climates where ambient temperatures regularly exceed 40°C for months at a stretch. Acclimatisation to external heat does not equal acclimatisation to sauna heat, the mechanisms are different, but it does mean the dramatic cardiovascular shock some cold-climate populations experience in a steam room is less pronounced for someone who has spent summers in Nagpur or Chennai. Whether that baseline tolerance changes the risk-benefit calculation for infrared use specifically has not been studied.The honest answer is that both sauna types carry real benefits for most healthy adults, and real risks for specific populations. The infrared version's lower operating temperature makes sessions more tolerable for heat-sensitive users and allows longer exposure, but tolerable and safe are not the same word, and the wellness industry rarely pauses to explain the difference. The body of evidence for infrared is younger and thinner than for traditional steam, which has four decades of Finnish longitudinal data behind it. An Indian user choosing between the two is not choosing between proven and unproven, they are choosing between a longer evidence trail and a more comfortable room.
