What HRV Is and Why It Is Not Just a Wearable Gimmick

Heart rate variability measures the millisecond-level variation between consecutive heartbeats. A heart beating at 60 beats per minute is not ticking once every exact second, the gaps between beats fluctuate constantly, and that fluctuation is HRV. Higher variability means your autonomic nervous system is responsive and balanced. How to Read a Falling HRV Without Panicking

A single low reading means nothing in isolation. HRV is a trend metric. What matters is the direction over five to seven days relative to your own baseline, not a comparison to population averages or the numbers on someone else's fitness app.A gradual downward trend across a training week, without an obvious cause like illness or poor sleep, is the signal that overexercising has tipped the balance. The appropriate response is not to push harder to break through the plateau. It is to reduce training volume, prioritise sleep, and give the parasympathetic system room to reassert itself.Some athletes use HRV scores to decide training intensity on the day. A score within their normal range: proceed with planned intensity. A score one standard deviation below baseline: drop to moderate effort. Two standard deviations below: active recovery or full rest.
