It is believed that science and religion stand at opposite ends of truth. But History tells a different story. The article comes with the lives of five genuis scientists, Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Galileo Galilei, Gregor Mendel and Georges Lemaître, whose scientific works shaped today's modern world while at the same time their faith shaped their understanding of it.
It is said that when a scientist enters the threshold of a science lab with his casual clothes he also puts off all his beliefs and faith at the door and puts on a scientific temperament with his lab coat. But if we walk through the pages of history, we find that, science and religion were not always seen as opposites, as both of them are branches of knowledge addressing different questions. Science tries to describe the physical world, while religion purpose. Across history there were many genious scientist whoes discoveries shaped the modern world believed in God. So here comes 5 scientists who believed in God and proved that faith and reason can coexist.
Isaac Newton known for his groundbreaking discovery of gravity and for gifting the world with the laws of Nature. He saw God as the grand designer of the universe so his laws of motion and gravity are just reflection of God's divine order. He beautifully quoted in his work Principia Mathematica “This most beautiful system of the sun, planets and comets could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being.” He also had said, "Gravity explain the motions of the planets but it cannot explain who set the planets in motion."
Albert Einestein was not a traditional religious person where a God intervenes in human affairs but he use to spoke of a cosmic religion admiring the mystery of creation. To him a superior spirit is there, that manifests in a understandable laws of the universe. He referred that entity as 'Spinoza's God'. When a sixth-grade student asks if scientists pray or not he answers in a letter in 1936 that "Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe; a spirit vastly superior to that of man." One of his famous quote is "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."
Though Galileo Galilei was stounch Catholic but he went on conflict with the Chruch for his heliocentric model that said the Earth is orbiting the Sun. Which contradicted the Church's geoventric view of that time. He said that "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."
Gregor Mendel known as father of modern genetics for his work on pea plants was a stong believer of God. He explain scientific works as a way to better understant God's creation. He rejected evolution theory of Charles Darwin. He became a priest and later abbot of his monastry. His works and scienfic paper was ignored during his lifetime but again acknowledged and rediscovered in 1900, 16 years after his death.
Greorges Lemaitre is known as the father of the Big Bang Theory. He was a Catholic priest, cosmologist and physicist. In his view science and faith is compatible and God is the ultimate source of all existence. He rejected the idea that science and faith are in conflict.
Actually, seeking truth is the innate quest of humankind. Whether it is science or religion both are the branches of a tree 'knowledge.' Now, from where the tree of knowledge sprouted is a question for you to search.
