They Study Less, Not More

Srushti Jayant Deshmukh, who topped the IAS in 2019, has spoken publicly about capping her study hours and building deliberate rest into her schedule. The common advice is to grind longer. The reality these toppers operate on is different: cognitive load research from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru consistently shows that retention drops sharply after 90 minutes of sustained focus without a break. Toppers have internalised this. They do fewer hours with full attention, not more hours with a wandering mind.
Chanakya wrote in the Arthashastra that a person who does not rest cannot sustain effort. The principle isn't rest as reward, it's rest as strategy. The toppers who follow structured 45-to-90-minute blocks with genuine breaks between them aren't being lazy. They're managing a biological resource most students burn through by noon.
They Revise Before They Learn
Standard advice says: study new material, then review it later. Top competitive exam scorers invert this. Before opening a new chapter, they spend time retrieving what they already know about the topic, from memory, without notes. This is called retrieval practice, and a 2013 study published in Psychological Science by Roediger and Butler showed it outperforms re-reading by a factor of nearly two on delayed retention tests.
What this looks like in practice: a NEET topper sits down before a new biology chapter and writes, from memory, everything she already knows about the system she's about to study. She gets things wrong. Those errors are the point. The brain consolidates learning faster when it has already attempted retrieval and failed, the failure creates a gap the new information fills precisely. Colour-coded notes fill nothing. They just look organised.
They Ignore the Syllabus Sequence
Every coaching institute in Kota, Hyderabad, and Delhi hands students a structured syllabus sequence. Most toppers abandon it. They study by concept weight, not chapter order, moving to whatever topic they're weakest on, regardless of where it falls in the official sequence. This violates the advice of almost every teacher who wants the class to stay together.
Chanakya's principle from the Arthashastra holds here too: a general who fights on ground of the enemy's choosing loses the advantage. Toppers choose their own ground. They Don't Use Highlighters or Elaborate Notes
This one costs students real money, in stationery, in time, and in false confidence. The highlighter creates the feeling of engagement without the cognitive work of encoding. A page covered in yellow and pink looks studied. The brain hasn't done anything with it.
IIT-JEE toppers interviewed by Careers360 repeatedly describe the same note system: one page, handwritten, per topic, written entirely from memory after closing the book. No copying. No transcription. The act of reconstructing from memory is the study. The note is a by-product, not the goal. If you can't write the page from memory, you haven't learned the topic yet, and the highlighter was hiding that fact from you.
They Practise Failure Deliberately
Most students avoid questions they can't answer. Toppers seek them out. This is the habit that looks the most counterintuitive from the outside and is the most mechanically sound on the inside. Attempting a question you will almost certainly get wrong, and then studying why you got it wrong, produces faster skill gain than repeating questions you already know how to solve.
This is the principle behind what sports scientists call desirable difficulty, a term developed by Robert Bjork at UCLA. Applied to exam preparation, it means a student who spends her last month before the JEE Advanced doing only questions at the edge of her ability will outperform a student who spends the same month consolidating what she already knows. The consolidation feels productive. The difficulty feels punishing. The exam doesn't care which one felt better.
The discipline these toppers share isn't willpower or early mornings or a colour-coded timetable. It's a willingness to let the study process feel uncomfortable, incomplete, and sometimes humiliating, because those are exactly the conditions under which the brain builds durable knowledge.
