All About the Two Women Officers Who Briefed on Operation Sindoor
In a significant and symbolic move, the Indian Armed Forces chose two distinguished women officers to address the global media on Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory strike on nine terrorist hideouts in Pakistan. Their presence at the press conference, alongside Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, delivered a powerful message about the growing role of women in military operations and strategic communication.
Colonel Sofia Quraishi of the Indian Army’s Signal Corps took the floor following the foreign secretary’s initial statement. The Signal Corps serves as the Army’s communication backbone. Col. Quraishi has an exemplary service record and came into the spotlight in 2016 when she became the first woman officer to lead an Indian contingent in a multinational military exercise involving 18 nations. Known for her professionalism, she is married to a senior Army officer currently commanding a frontline combat unit.
Representing the Indian Air Force, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, a seasoned helicopter pilot, also addressed the media. Commissioned in 2004 and promoted to Wing Commander in 2017, she is trained to fly Cheetah and Chetak helicopters and has logged nearly 2,500 flying hours.
The selection of two women officers as spokespersons was widely viewed as a deliberate and impactful decision. It reflected themes of resilience and representation, particularly significant in the wake of the April 22 terrorist attack in Baisaran, Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 Indian tourists, leaving many women widowed and families shattered. The press conference received widespread praise from across the political spectrum. Former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar called it “a bold declaration,” applauding the two officers for leading from the front. AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj highlighted the strength and composure displayed by the trio of Misri, Quraishi, and Singh. Retired Maj Gen (Dr) Yash Mor, who had served with Col. Quraishi in the past, expressed pride in seeing her in this pivotal role, affirming her capability and dedication.
