Nadaaniyan
Bollywood is a huge fan of Rom-Com and teenage romance, so are their audience but what if our favorite genre fails to amaze us? Huge Disappointment, right? Netflix's new release on March 7, 2025, Nadaaniyan Starring the infamous Khushi Kapoor and Ibrahim Ali Khan, sadly was an unsuccessful attempt, when it came to audience entertainment.
Ibrahim Ali Khan's big blazing debut was a major miss. Expectations were set but never met. Directed by Shauna Gautam, Nadaniyan was a much-awaited awaited movie especially, the youngsters the hype was real. Alongside mature senior artists such as Dia Mirza, Sunil Shetty and Jugal Hansraj in the context of South Delhi's affluent high school society, the movie aims to examine the well-known "fake relationship turns real" cliché. Unfortunately, Nadaaniyan mostly fails to make an impression on the audience, even with its enticing structure.

Could An Overrated Storyline be the issue?

IBRAHIM ALI KHAN AS ARJUN MEHTA

The story revolves around Pia Jaisingh (Khushi Kapoor), a wealthy and slightly arrogant young woman from a well-known family based in South Delhi who is stuck in a socially tricky situation. She hires Arjun Mehta (Ibrahim Ali Khan), a middle-class boy with scholarly inclinations, to pose as her boyfriend in an attempt to fend off the advances of her former boyfriend and maintain her social image. As is to be expected, what starts out as a business deal soon turns into something deeper, leading to emotional turmoil and self-realization.

While this concept has been the plot of a number of young Bollywood and Hollywood romances over the years, Nadaaniyan does not necessarily bring anything new to the table. The film is essentially a rehash of a number of romantic comedies because it sticks to the same formula without presenting its characters with fresh perspectives or depth.

Khushi and Ibrahim's Chemistry? Hit or Miss?

NADAANIYAN

Saif Ali Khan's son Ibrahim Ali Khan, persona and on- screen presence undeniable but what about the acting part? Despite his charming personality, he lacks the innate appeal required for a main part in a romantic comedy and his language delivery sometimes sounds awkward. Even if it seems promising in several situations, his chemistry with Khushi Kapoor is ultimately insufficient to emotionally captivate the spectator. In contrast, Khushi Kapoor struggles to portray Pia. Her characterization is unable to achieve the subtlety in expressions needed to make the character relatable, even as she exudes polished beauty and has great screen presence. Her transformation from being a shallow, rich teenager to having depth in emotions is tried to be portrayed in the film but feels abrupt rather than organic.
The rest of the cast, featuring experienced actors such as Mahima Chaudhry and Dia Mirza, tries its best with the little material it is provided with. Suniel Shetty and Jugal Hansraj make fleeting but forgettable appearances. Their characters are not well developed, so their performances come across as mere fillers and not as contributions to the narrative

An Overview of the Screenplay

WRAPPING UP: THE TEAM

One of the film's weaker elements is the screenplay, which Gautam and co-writers Anuja Sharma and Rishi Taneja wrote. Particularly during significant emotional times when they ought to have seemed genuine and natural, the talks come across as forced. Furthermore, the humor, which is a crucial component of any romantic comedy, frequently fails to land as it should.
Another issue with the movie is how Delhi high school life is portrayed. Despite its aesthetic attractiveness, the upscale educational environment seems totally out of touch with reality. Viewers find it tough to relate to the pupils' hardships since they act more like caricatures from an overdone Karan Johar movie than like real teens. Realistic school-life struggles are glossed over in favor of ostentatious parties, luxury clothes, and flimsy drama.

Music and Cinematography: Appealing yet Empty

NADAANIYAN POSTER

The aesthetic attractiveness of Nadaaniyan is among its few positive features. The grandeur of South Delhi's affluent areas has been expertly captured by cinematographer Arun Kashyap, who makes sure that each scene is elegant and well-polished. Notwithstanding its narrative flaws, the film's visual appeal is enhanced by the use of vivid colors and glossy images.
Amit Trivedi wrote the soundtrack, which consists of a blend of heartfelt romance songs and energetic dance pieces. Even while the tunes are appealing, they might not have a lasting effect. The background music eventually acts as a reminder of the film's empty core while attempting to bring vitality to situations that lack emotional depth.
Here is what the audience has to say:
Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express found the film "tone deaf and offensive," comparing it unfavorably to older Bollywood rom-coms that had at least some substance beneath their glamour.
Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV labeled it "a passably lively but spectacularly shallow rom-com," adding that the film’s tone undermines its well-meaning intentions.
Rishabh Suri of Hindustan Times criticized the screenplay for its unrealistic portrayal of school life, stating that the film exists in a bubble far removed from reality.
With amateurish acting Nadaaniyan falls falt, any potential that the story might have had was doomed from the beginning. Leaving the audience with a sense of regret. Despite the criticism, Nadaaniyan is likely to get its audience amongst young viewers who are fond of light romance coupled with fashionable looks. But as a movie in search of depth, originality, and gritty performances, Nadaaniyan fails.
If you are freeing yourself especially for the sake of watching this movie, you rather not but all in all a good timepass with its fair share of dull-witted comedy.
