India is facing a fresh surge in Covid-19 cases with over 1,000 new infections reported recently. States like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi are leading the rise, driven by new variants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7. This article breaks down the latest government data, symptoms linked to these variants, and practical safety guidelines to help you stay protected during this ongoing wave.
After wreaking havoc across the globe from 2019 to 2022, Covid-19 is once again making a gradual comeback in Asia. Countries like Singapore and Hong Kong have recently reported a significant surge in cases. India, too, is witnessing a rise in infections driven by new Covid variants, particularly NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, detected in different parts of the country.

While Covid-19 remains endemic — meaning it continues to circulate in the population but at manageable levels — the government has assured that the current situation does not pose an immediate threat. Still, understanding these new variants and their unique characteristics is crucial as we navigate this phase.

The latest government data shows a concerning increase in active Covid-19 cases across several states:

  • Kerala tops the list with 430 active cases, the highest in the country right now.
  • Maharashtra follows with 209 active cases and has recently reported 4 Covid-related deaths.
  • Delhi has seen a notable rise, with 104 active cases and 99 new infections in just the past week, rekindling public concern.
  • Gujarat reports 83 active cases, with 4 cases of the LF.7 variant detected recently.
  • Karnataka has 47 active cases and recorded 1 Covid-related death.
  • Other states like Uttar Pradesh (15) and West Bengal (12) are also seeing infections.
Meanwhile, some states and union territories including Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands currently report no active Covid cases. Notably, Bihar recently confirmed its first Covid case of this wave — a 31-year-old Patna resident with no recent travel history. His infection is mild and under close monitoring.

What Are These New Variants?

The variants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 are sublineages of the Omicron family, which has dominated the Covid-19 landscape globally since late 2021. India’s dominant variant remains JN.1, accounting for approximately 53% of recent cases. This variant presents some unique symptoms compared to earlier Omicron strains.

What Makes JN.1 Different?

Unlike previous Omicron subvariants, JN.1 has been linked to:

  • A higher frequency of sore throat as an early symptom.
  • Prolonged fatigue, lasting several days, even in mild cases.
These subtle differences can help healthcare professionals identify infections and respond accordingly.

Staying Safe: What You Can Do

The rise in cases is a reminder to maintain vigilance. Here are simple but effective steps to protect yourself and others:

  • Wear masks in crowded or indoor public spaces.
  • Stay home and get tested if you experience any symptoms.
  • Keep vaccinations and boosters up to date.
  • Practice good hand hygiene by washing regularly.
  • Ventilate indoor areas to reduce virus concentration.
  • Follow local health advisories for updates and guidelines.

Looking Ahead

Covid-19 continues to evolve, but with informed awareness and responsible precautions, we can keep its impact manageable. The current increase in cases does not mean a return to the severe disruptions of earlier waves. Instead, it’s a reminder that Covid-19 remains with us and demands ongoing attention.

By staying mindful and proactive, we protect not just ourselves, but our communities as well. The virus may be back, but so is our readiness to face it.
