When we hear the story of the Ramayana, we often think of Ravana as the villain — the demon king who kidnapped Sita and fought against Lord Ram. But there’s a surprising part of the story that many people don’t know: After killing Ravana, Lord Ram actually worshiped him.Let’s understand the real reason behind it.
Why would Lord Ram do that?
Ravana: Not Just a Villain
exceptional knowledge of Ravana.
He knew all the Vedas and holy scriptures. Ravana was a huge devotee of Lord Shiva and was famous for his deep love and prayers towards him. He even wrote the Shiva Tandava Stotram, a beautiful hymn praising Lord Shiva.
Ravana was born into a Brahmin family and was called a Mahabrahman, meaning a "great Brahmin." Even though he made big mistakes because of his ego, his knowledge and devotion were unmatched.
Why Lord Rama Had to Perform Rituals
Even though Ravana had done wrong by kidnapping Sita, he was still a Brahmin by birth. After killing him, Lord Rama had to do special funeral rituals called Pind Daan to free Ravana’s soul and to remove the sin of killing a Brahmin.
Lord Ram respected Dharma (righteousness) so much that he followed the rules strictly, even if it meant honoring the enemy he had just defeated.
This act showed that even a God must follow the path of Dharma.
Why Ravana Had to Be Killed
reasons why ravana was killed
He thought no one could defeat him, and because of that pride, he kidnapped Sita, which was a big act of adharma (wrongdoing).
Despite being warned many times, Ravana refused to return Sita respectfully.
Lord Ram, who always protected Dharma, had no choice but to fight and defeat Ravana.
However, Lord Ram never hated Ravana. He only punished Ravana’s bad actions, not his good qualities.
In fact, before killing Ravana, Lord Ram told his brother Lakshman to go and learn from Ravana, because Ravana still had great knowledge and wisdom to share. This shows how much Lord Ram respected learning, even from an enemy.
What We Can Learn from This Story
Respect knowledge and goodness, even if the person has made mistakes.
Lord Ram’s act of doing Pind Daan for Ravana shows that true Dharma is not about ego, anger, or revenge.
It is about doing what is right, showing humility, and respecting wisdom and truth.
Even though Ravana’s pride led to his downfall, his knowledge and devotion were so great that even Lord Ram honored him after death.
This story reminds us that being humble and following the path of Dharma is what makes a person truly great.
Jai Shri Ram!
