Banni Grasslands of Kutch: What India's Largest Grassland Holds and What Is Erasing Its Wildlife
A Grassland That Doesn't Look Like One
Most people picture a grassland as something lush and open, rolling green, the kind of place that announces itself. Banni does the opposite. It sits on the northern edge of the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, a flat, sun-baked plain that looks, to an untrained eye, like scrubland on the edge of giving up. The grass is short and dry for much of the year. The soil is saline and waterlogged after the monsoon, cracked and pale by February. And yet this 2,500-square-kilometre expanse is the largest tropical grassland in Asia. The biological richness it holds is invisible until you know what you're looking at.
The Banni is technically classified as a seasonally flooded grassland, meaning its ecology depends on the annual cycle of inundation from monsoon rains and the subsequent drying. That cycle has shaped everything here, the grass species, the grazing patterns of animals, the movement of the Maldhari pastoral communities who have lived inside Banni for generations. The Maldharis keep Kankrej cattle and Banni buffalo, both breeds adapted specifically to this terrain. The Banni buffalo, a distinct breed recognised by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, produces milk with exceptionally high fat content and has survived conditions that would exhaust most livestock breeds in India.
What Lives Here
The grassland supports over 270 species of birds. During winter, the wetland patches that form after the monsoon draw flamingos, pelicans, cranes, and raptors migrating from Central Asia and Siberia. The Indian wolf, now listed as Endangered under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, uses Banni as one of its last viable habitats in Gujarat. The Indian fox, the desert cat, the blackbuck, and the chinkara all move through it. Striped hyenas den in the drier margins.
Scientifically, the grassland grasses themselves are the story. Species like Sporobolus helvolus, Dichanthium annulatum, and Cenchrus species form the base of the grazing food web. These grasses have evolved over millennia to tolerate saline soil and seasonal flooding, a combination that almost no cultivated grass can handle. The pastoral grazing by Maldhari cattle and buffalo, far from degrading this base, has historically maintained it. Moderate grazing pressure keeps competitive shrubs from establishing and allows the grass to regenerate. This is not a romantic claim about traditional knowledge, it is a documented ecological relationship confirmed by researchers at the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology.
The Invasion Nobody Stopped in Time
In the 1960s, Prosopis juliflora, a thorny, fast-growing shrub introduced from Central America, was planted across parts of Kutch as a fuelwood and afforestation measure. It was a well-intentioned decision that has since become one of the most damaging ecological introductions in western India. Prosopis juliflora is allelopathic, meaning it releases chemicals into the soil that suppress the germination of native grasses. It spreads aggressively, fixes nitrogen in ways that alter soil chemistry, and its dense canopy eliminates the open ground that grassland birds and mammals require. Biological invasions of this kind are, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the second-leading cause of biodiversity loss globally after habitat destruction.
By conservative estimates, Prosopis juliflora now covers more than 60 percent of Banni's original grassland area. The figure comes from remote sensing studies conducted by the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad, which tracked vegetation change across the Banni over several decades. The grass has retreated. The shrub has advanced. And because Prosopis produces seed pods that Maldhari cattle eat and disperse, the pastoral communities themselves have inadvertently accelerated the spread, not through negligence, but because nobody warned them early enough about what the plant would do.
What Removal Looks Like, and Why It's Complicated
Efforts to remove Prosopis juliflora from Banni have been ongoing since the early 2000s. The work is manual, slow, and expensive. The shrub resprouts from the root if not fully excavated. Mechanical removal has been tried in patches, and in areas where it has been sustained, native grasses have returned within two to three monsoon cycles, a finding documented by the Sahjeevan Centre for Pastoral Development, which has worked in Kutch for decades. The recovery is real, but the scale of the problem dwarfs current removal capacity.
There is also a political and economic layer. Prosopis wood is the primary fuel source for many Maldhari households. Removing the shrub means removing fuel. Any serious restoration programme has to offer an alternative energy source simultaneously, or it will fail at the community level regardless of how sound the ecology is. The Gujarat Forest Department has worked with NGOs on this, but the coordination has been inconsistent. Banni was declared a Protected Area in 1955 and later a Wildlife Sanctuary, but the Maldhari communities who predate that designation have never been formally resettled, leaving their land rights in a grey zone that complicates every conservation decision made since.
The Rann Connection
Banni does not exist in isolation. It sits at the edge of the Great Rann of Kutch, the vast salt flat that floods seasonally and drains into the grassland's margins. The health of the wetland patches inside Banni, the ones that draw migratory birds each winter, depends on this connection remaining intact. Infrastructure development along the Rann's edges, including road construction and the expansion of salt extraction operations, has begun to alter drainage patterns. When the wetland patches shrink or fail to form in a given year, the birds that depend on them simply do not come. The grassland's biodiversity is not a fixed inventory. It is an annual negotiation between rainfall, drainage, grazing, and now, an introduced shrub that has no interest in negotiating.
The Banni's condition is a precise record of what happens when an introduced species, a colonial-era land designation, and a development corridor converge on the same piece of ground over sixty years. The Maldharis are still here, the wolves are still here, the flamingos still arrive. But the grass they all depend on is covering less ground every monsoon than it did the one before.
