The brown dog tick is the primary vector of Ehrlichia canis in India, and it thrives precisely when most pet owners stop worrying about infestation. Monsoon humidity accelerates the tick's life cycle, turning a manageable seasonal nuisance into a genuine threat to canine health. Here is what the biology actually means for your dog.

The Brown Dog Tick Is Not an Outdoor Problem

Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the brown dog tick, is the only tick species known to complete its entire life cycle indoors. Every other tick needs outdoor vegetation for at least one stage. This one does not. It lays eggs in wall cracks, behind skirting boards, inside kennels, and in the folds of dog bedding, which means a dog that never leaves the apartment can still carry a full-blown infestation. In Indian cities where dogs live in flats and sleep on sofas, that biological fact matters more than almost anything else about the species.
The tick is reddish-brown, roughly 3 mm when unfed and up to 12 mm when engorged. It has three active life stages, larva, nymph, adult, and each stage requires a blood meal before it can moult into the next. A single female lays between 1,000 and 3,000 eggs after her final feed. The arithmetic of that reproductive rate explains why an infestation can go from one or two ticks to hundreds within weeks.

How Ehrlichia Gets Into Your Dog

Ehrlichia canis is a rickettsial bacterium that lives inside white blood cells. The brown dog tick picks it up by feeding on an infected dog, carries it through its moult into the next life stage, and injects it into the next dog it feeds on. The transmission window is not immediate: the tick must be attached for at least three hours before it begins transferring the pathogen, which is why daily tick checks, done thoroughly, can interrupt the cycle before infection occurs.
Once inside a dog, Ehrlichia canis targets monocytes, a type of white blood cell, and suppresses the immune response the dog's body would normally mount. The resulting disease, canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, moves through three phases. The acute phase, lasting two to four weeks, produces fever, lethargy, and reduced appetite. If the dog's immune system cannot clear the infection, it enters a subclinical phase where the dog appears normal but the bacterium persists. The chronic phase, which can arrive months later, causes severe weight loss, bleeding disorders, and sometimes fatal bone marrow suppression. Dogs in the chronic phase often go undiagnosed because owners attribute the earlier symptoms to a passing illness.

Why Monsoon and Post-Monsoon Months Are the Danger Window

Tick populations in India follow humidity, and humidity follows the monsoon. Relative humidity above 70% dramatically shortens the time a tick egg takes to hatch and the time a larva takes to find a host. In cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, where the monsoon runs from June through September and post-monsoon humidity stays elevated well into November, the brown dog tick gets an extended breeding window that does not exist in drier climates.
The post-monsoon months are particularly dangerous because tick numbers peak roughly six to eight weeks after the heaviest rains, which places the highest infestation pressure in October and November, exactly when owners have stopped thinking about ticks. Veterinary clinics in these cities consistently report ehrlichiosis cases spiking in this window. Fleas compound the problem: Ctenocephalides felis, the cat flea, also thrives in humid conditions and shares the dog's coat, creating the kind of sustained skin irritation that makes dogs scratch constantly, breaking the skin barrier and creating entry points for secondary bacterial infections alongside the tick-borne disease.

One additional mechanism makes the season matter beyond pure numbers. Dogs that are already immunocompromised from heat stress or nutritional deficiency, common in strays and in dogs fed poor-quality food during summer months, are less able to fight off the acute phase of ehrlichiosis when tick pressure rises in October. The season does not just deliver more ticks; it delivers them to dogs whose defences are already lower.

Recognising Ehrlichiosis Before It Reaches the Chronic Phase

The acute phase signs are easy to miss because they overlap with several other conditions: fever above 39.5°C, reduced appetite, swollen lymph nodes, and a reluctance to move. Nosebleeds or bleeding from the gums are a more specific indicator and should be treated as an emergency. A complete blood count will typically show thrombocytopenia, a drop in platelet count, which is the most consistent laboratory finding in ehrlichiosis across all three phases.
If your vet suspects ehrlichiosis, a PCR test or an indirect fluorescent antibody test can confirm Ehrlichia canis specifically. Doxycycline is the standard treatment and works well in the acute phase; chronic cases require longer courses and sometimes supportive care for the bone marrow. The outcome difference between acute and chronic diagnosis is significant. Dogs caught in the acute phase recover fully in most cases. Dogs that reach the chronic phase face a much harder road.

Prevention That Actually Works in Indian Conditions

Tick prevention in India requires accounting for the indoor life cycle. Treating only the dog is not sufficient if the environment is not also treated, because eggs and larvae in wall cracks will simply re-infest a freshly treated dog within days.A practical protocol:1. Apply a veterinarian-prescribed acaricide, a tick-killing product, to the dog monthly, and increase to every three weeks during the monsoon and post-monsoon window. Spot-on treatments and tick collars both work; the choice depends on whether your dog swims or bathes frequently, since some spot-ons lose efficacy when wet.2. Wash all dog bedding in hot water weekly from June through November. Dry in direct sunlight where possible.3. Vacuum the home thoroughly, paying attention to skirting boards, under furniture, and any area where the dog rests. Dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the canister outside immediately.4. Ask your vet about environmental sprays for the home if you have had a confirmed infestation. These are different from the products applied to the dog and should not be used on animals directly.5. Check your dog manually every day during peak season, run your fingers through the coat against the grain, paying attention to the ears, between the toes, around the collar line, and in the groin area. Remove any attached tick with fine-tipped tweezers, gripping close to the skin and pulling straight out without twisting.Fleas and ticks often coexist on the same dog, so if you find fleas, check for ticks too. Many combination products treat both, but confirm with your vet before using any product on puppies or dogs with existing health conditions.

The brown dog tick's ability to breed indoors, combined with the monsoon's acceleration of its life cycle and the three-phase progression of Ehrlichia canis, means the disease can move from invisible to irreversible without a single obvious warning sign. Catching it requires knowing when to look, and the calendar, not the dog's symptoms, is usually the better prompt.
