Your kitchen holds chocolate for mithai season, onion in every sabzi, garlic in the tadka, grapes on the fruit plate. For your dog, each of these is a potential poisoning event, some immediately dangerous, some quietly cumulative. The dose determines the damage, and the thresholds are lower than most Indian pet owners realise.

What Chocolate Actually Does Inside a Dog

Theobromine, the alkaloid that gives chocolate its bitterness, is processed by human liver enzymes in about 20 minutes. A dog's metabolism takes six to twelve times longer. That gap is what makes a post-celebration mithai box left on a low table a medical emergency.


Theobromine and caffeine, both present in chocolate, are methylxanthines that dogs cannot clear efficiently. They inhibit adenosine receptors, causing cardiac stimulation, muscle tremors, and seizures at sufficient concentrations. The toxicity is dose-dependent and chocolate-type-dependent: dark chocolate contains roughly 130 to 450 mg of theobromine per 100g; milk chocolate, 44 to 60 mg; white chocolate, under 2 mg. A 10 kg dog begins showing symptoms, vomiting, restlessness, elevated heart rate, at around 100 to 200 mg of theobromine total. That is less than 50g of dark chocolate. A single generous square from a bar of Bournville can push a small dog past the threshold.

Onion and Garlic: The Slow Damage

Organosulfide compounds in onion and garlic oxidise haemoglobin in canine red blood cells, producing Heinz bodies, abnormal protein clumps that mark the cell for destruction by the spleen. The result is haemolytic anaemia: the dog's body destroys its own blood faster than it replaces it. This process is not immediate. A dog fed a small amount of onion daily for a week may show no symptoms until the anaemia has progressed to lethargy, pale gums, and rapid breathing.


Garlic is roughly five times more concentrated in organosulfides than onion by weight. Per gram consumed, it is the more dangerous of the two. A 2000 study published in the American Journal of Veterinary Research confirmed that 5g of onion per kilogram of body weight is sufficient to produce measurable haematological changes in dogs. In the average Indian household, where onion goes into nearly every cooked dish and dogs are often fed table scraps, cumulative exposure is rarely tracked. Cats are even more sensitive, their haemoglobin is structurally more susceptible to oxidative damage, but dogs are more commonly affected because they eat more varied scraps.

Grapes: No Safe Amount, No Identified Mechanism

Grapes and raisins are the most poorly understood toxin on this list. Veterinary researchers have not isolated the specific compound responsible for acute kidney failure in dogs. The toxicity is not dose-linear in any predictable way: some dogs have consumed large quantities with no apparent effect; others have gone into renal failure after a handful. The California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory, along with multiple case reports in the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, documents fatalities in dogs that ate fewer than ten grapes.


Because the mechanism is unknown, there is no established safe threshold. The only defensible position is zero exposure. Raisins are more dangerous by weight than fresh grapes because the toxic compound concentrates during drying, making that small box of kishmish in the kitchen cupboard a higher-risk item than a full bunch of fresh fruit.

Dose Is the Variable, Not the Ingredient

The phrase "a little won't hurt" is where most pet poisoning begins. For chocolate, the dose-response is well-mapped: the estimated lethal dose in dogs is approximately 300 mg of theobromine per kilogram of body weight, which means a lethal quantity of dark chocolate for a 5 kg dog is around 100 to 150g. For onion and garlic, the damage accumulates without a visible signal until the anaemia is severe. For grapes, the unpredictability of individual response means dose calculation offers false reassurance.



The common thread is that all three operate through mechanisms dogs did not evolve to handle, methylxanthine clearance, oxidative red cell stress, and an unknown renal toxin, and the Indian kitchen keeps all three within casual reach. A chocolate barfi left over from a celebration, a bowl of sabzi scraped onto the dog's plate, a few grapes offered as a treat: none of these feel like poisoning events in the moment. The biology does not care about the intention.


The most dangerous assumption is that familiarity with an ingredient implies safety for every species in the house. Theobromine is harmless to humans at any culinary dose. Organosulfides make food taste like food. Grapes are a health food. The dog's liver, red blood cells, and kidneys are running a different operating system entirely, and the kitchen was not built with that difference in mind.
