Festival season hits dogs like a physical blow. Canine hearing is four times more sensitive than ours, and the combined assault of dhol, firecrackers, and crowd noise can cause lasting damage and acute anxiety. If you're waiting until the night of Diwali to react, you're already too late. Here's what the noise actually does to your dog's ears, and how to prepare weeks in advance.

What a Dog's Ears Are Actually Doing During a Festival

Dogs hear frequencies between 40 Hz and 65,000 Hz. Humans top out at around 20,000 Hz. That gap is not a minor upgrade, it means your dog is processing an entire register of sound that is completely invisible to you. A string of firecrackers that sounds sharp and loud to you arrives at your dog's ears as something closer to a physical concussion in the air. The dhol, played at close range during a baraat or a neighbourhood procession, produces low-frequency booms that travel through walls, floors, and the dog's chest cavity simultaneously.


A 2019 study published in PLOS ONE, which tracked 4,000 dogs across the UK during Guy Fawkes Night, found that 72 percent of dogs showed at least one behavioural sign of distress during fireworks events. Indian festivals present a more sustained version of the same problem: Diwali alone can run three to five consecutive nights of intermittent firecracker bursts, often beginning well before sunset and continuing past midnight. Add Navratri dandiya nights, wedding season dhol processions, and Holi celebrations with loudspeakers, and a dog in a dense urban neighbourhood like Malviya Nagar or Koramangala may face elevated noise exposure across several weeks with no recovery window between events.

The Specific Damage Festival Noise Does

Noise-induced hearing loss in dogs works through the same mechanism as in humans: sustained or sudden loud sound damages the hair cells inside the cochlea. Unlike skin cells, cochlear hair cells do not regenerate. A single extremely loud event, a large firecracker burst at close range, can cause temporary threshold shift, which is a temporary reduction in hearing sensitivity. Repeated exposure without recovery time can convert that into a permanent threshold shift. Dogs who live in high-rise apartments in cities like Mumbai or Bengaluru, where firecrackers are set off in enclosed courtyards and the sound bounces between buildings, face particular risk because the reflected sound compounds the original burst.


Beyond structural hearing damage, the stress response itself is harmful. When a dog enters a fear state from sudden loud noise, cortisol and adrenaline spike. Heart rate climbs. Muscle tension increases. In dogs with pre-existing cardiac conditions, this acute stress response carries real clinical risk. In otherwise healthy dogs, cortisol that stays elevated for hours after the triggering noise has stopped disrupts sleep, appetite, and immune function. A dog that appears to have calmed down two hours after the firecrackers ended may still have cortisol levels significantly above baseline.

Reading the Signs Before the Panic Sets In

Most owners recognise the obvious distress signals: hiding under beds, trembling, refusing to eat, attempting to bolt through doors or windows. Fewer recognise the earlier, quieter signals that appear before full panic.


  • Yawning repeatedly outside of sleep contexts
  • Excessive lip-licking with no food present
  • Ears pinned flat but body otherwise still
  • Panting without physical exertion or heat
  • Refusing to go outside for toilet breaks at usual times
  • Following you from room to room more than normal

Watch for these in the days and nights when noise exposure begins to build:These are displacement behaviours, the dog's nervous system is already managing a load it cannot fully express yet. Catching anxiety at this stage gives you a much wider window to intervene before the dog reaches the threshold where reasoning and training cues stop working.

How to Prepare Early, Before the Season Starts

The preparation window that actually works is three to four weeks before peak festival noise begins. Waiting until the evening of the first Diwali night leaves you with almost no tools that function in real time.



1. Desensitisation with recorded sounds. Play recordings of firecrackers and dhol at very low volume while your dog is doing something positive, eating, playing, resting near you. Over two to three weeks, raise the volume incrementally. The goal is not to make the dog enjoy the sound. The goal is to lower the ceiling of what triggers a full stress response. Several veterinary behaviourists, including those at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, recommend this as the first-line behavioural intervention for noise phobia.


2. Create a dedicated safe space now. Dogs in distress seek enclosed, dark spaces because they reduce sensory input. A crate covered with a thick blanket, placed in an interior room away from windows, works well. The dog needs to be comfortable in this space before the noise arrives, not introduced to it during a crisis. Start feeding your dog in this space weeks in advance so the association is already positive.



3. Ask your vet about pharmacological support before the season. Medications like trazodone or melatonin supplements are often prescribed for noise anxiety in dogs. These require a vet's assessment and, in the case of prescription medications, time to trial and adjust dosage. A vet you see on the afternoon of Diwali cannot safely prescribe and calibrate in the same evening.


4. Reduce outdoor exposure during peak noise hours. Adjust your dog's walk schedule so toilet breaks happen in the early morning and early afternoon during festival weeks. A dog that is already outside when a firecracker burst happens has no retreat available.



5. Keep your own behaviour steady. Dogs read human anxiety with precision. If you hover, over-reassure, or become visibly tense when noise starts, the dog reads that as confirmation that the situation is dangerous. Calm, matter-of-fact behaviour from you is not indifference, it is information the dog is actively using to calibrate its own response.


Earmuffs designed for dogs exist and are sold by brands like Mutt Muffs, but their effectiveness depends entirely on the dog being acclimated to wearing them in advance. Putting them on a panicking dog for the first time during a firecracker burst will almost certainly make the situation worse, not better.



The preparation that works is boring and slow and needs to begin well before the first dhol is heard in the street. The dog cannot be told what is coming. You are the only one who knows.


A dog that has been through several festival seasons of unmanaged noise exposure does not simply get used to it over time. The research on chronic noise stress in animals shows the opposite: repeated exposure without intervention tends to lower the threshold at which the fear response triggers, making each subsequent season harder than the last. The biological damage to the ears accumulates quietly, the behavioural sensitisation compounds, and by the time the owner notices something has changed, the dog has already spent years absorbing a cost that preparation could have reduced.
