Do Insects Feel Pain? What Neuroscience Reveals About Insect Sentience and Animal Suffering

A bee sting triggers the same neural alarm cascade in a bee's body that it does in yours. Neuroscience is now finding that insects may register pain through nociception, a biological process once thought exclusive to vertebrates. What that means for how we think about animal suffering, consciousness, and the creatures we casually swat, spray, and step on is a question biology can no longer sidestep.
The nervous system that wasn't supposed to matter
For most of the twentieth century, nociception in insects was treated as a reflex, a purely mechanical response with no inner experience attached to it. Insects have roughly one million neurons. Humans have about 86 billion. The assumption was that the gap in neural complexity meant a gap in anything resembling felt experience. That assumption is now being tested seriously, and the results are not straightforward.
Insects do possess nociceptors. These are the sensory cells that detect tissue damage, and their presence in invertebrates was confirmed through detailed work on Drosophila melanogaster, the common fruit fly, by researchers including Daniel Tracey at Indiana University, whose 2003 study in the journal Cell identified nociceptive neurons in fly larvae that responded to heat and mechanical injury in ways that parallel vertebrate pain pathways.
What the research actually shows
In 2021, a team at Queen Mary University of London led by Lars Chittka published research showing that bumblebees display what the study called pessimistic cognitive bias after a painful event, a state that in vertebrate research is used as a proxy for negative emotional experience. Bees that had been exposed to a noxious stimulus were slower to approach ambiguous reward cues, a pattern consistent with a dampened motivational state. This is not proof of conscious suffering. It is, however, evidence that the insect's internal state changed in a way that affected subsequent behaviour, which is more than a simple reflex can explain.
Separate research on crabs and lobsters, also invertebrates, led the United Kingdom to extend animal welfare protections to decapod crustaceans in 2021, following a review commissioned by the UK government. Insects were not included in that review, but the underlying logic, that nociception combined with behavioural evidence of altered states warrants precaution, is now being applied to the insect question as well.
The consciousness problem
Andrew Barron and Colin Klein, writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2016, argued that insects possess a midbrain-equivalent structure, the central complex, that could support a basic form of subjective experience. Their position is contested. Other neurobiologists hold that without a cortex, there is no inner life, only sophisticated signal processing. The debate has not resolved. What has shifted is the willingness of serious researchers to take the insect question at all.
Why this matters outside the laboratory
The same question touches pest control in homes, the treatment of insects in school biology labs, and the growing global industry of insect farming for protein, a sector that slaughters billions of mealworms and black soldier fly larvae annually. The 2021 Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness, signed by a group of prominent neuroscientists, did not include insects explicitly, but it stated that non-human animals possess the neurological substrates for conscious states. Insect researchers have since argued that the declaration's logic extends further than its authors initially drew the line.
None of this requires treating a mosquito with the same moral weight as a dog. What it does require is a cleaner account of why we draw the lines where we draw them, and whether those lines are based on evidence or on the convenience of the assumption that small things do not feel.
What biology keeps finding
Insects are the largest animal group on earth by species count, and by individual count they are not comparable to any other category, the estimated number of individual insects alive at any moment runs to ten quintillion. The question of whether they experience anything is, by sheer arithmetic, one of the most consequential open questions in biology. The answer will not come from a single study. It will come from the accumulation of behavioural, neurological, and evolutionary evidence that researchers are now building with more seriousness than the question has ever received before.
The insect that crosses your kitchen counter tonight carries a nervous system shaped by hundreds of millions of years of evolution. Whether it carries anything else is the question neuroscience is only beginning to ask properly.
