Heatstroke in Dogs: The Temperature Threshold, Early Symptoms and Why Ice-Cold Water Makes It Worse

When a dog's temperature crosses 40°C, heatstroke can cause organ failure within minutes. The signs, frantic panting, brick-red gums, sudden collapse, are easy to miss until it's too late. And the instinct to pour ice-cold water? It actively traps heat inside the body. Here's what the biology actually demands.
The number that matters: 40°C
Dogs cool themselves almost entirely through panting. Unlike humans, they have almost no functional sweat glands across their skin, the few they have are located in the paw pads and contribute negligibly to cooling. Panting works by evaporating moisture from the tongue and upper respiratory tract. When the air itself is hot and humid, evaporation slows, and panting becomes progressively less effective. The dog works harder, generates more metabolic heat, and the cycle accelerates.
The early signs most owners miss
Watch for these, in rough order of escalation:
1. Panting that is louder, faster, or more laboured than the dog's usual warm-weather panting, the tongue often appears wider and flatter than normal, pushed out to maximise surface area.
2. Excessive drooling, sometimes thick and ropy.
3. Gum colour shifting from healthy pink to a deep, brick red. This is one of the most reliable early indicators. Pale or white gums that follow indicate shock, a later, more critical stage.
4. Restlessness or agitation, followed by sudden lethargy. The dog may seek shade, refuse to move, or seem confused about where it is.
5. Vomiting or diarrhoea, which signals the gastrointestinal lining is already stressed.
Brachycephalic breeds, Pugs, French Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, Boxers, are at disproportionately higher risk because their shortened airways make efficient panting structurally impossible. A Pug overheats faster and cools slower than a Labrador under identical conditions. Thick double-coated breeds like Huskies and Chow Chows carry an insulating layer that slows heat dissipation even further.
Why ice-cold water is the wrong move
When ice-cold water hits the skin, the body interprets it as a threat and responds with peripheral vasoconstriction, the blood vessels near the skin tighten and narrow. This is a protective reflex designed to prevent the core from losing heat in cold environments. Applied to a hyperthermic dog, it does exactly what it's designed to do: it locks heat inside the core at the moment you most need it to escape. The dog's skin may feel cooler to the touch while the internal temperature continues to rise.
A 2006 study published in the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care found that evaporative cooling, wetting the coat with room-temperature water and placing the dog in front of moving air, was more effective at lowering core temperature than immersion in cold water, and carried a lower risk of rebound hypothermia once the dog reached a veterinary facility.
The correct protocol: move the dog to shade or an air-conditioned space immediately. Apply cool (not cold) water to the paw pads, groin, armpits, and neck, areas where blood vessels run close to the surface. Use a fan or move air across the wet coat. Do not cover the dog with wet towels, which trap heat rather than releasing it. Get to a vet as fast as possible regardless of how the dog appears to be responding, internal organ damage is not visible from the outside.
What happens if you wait
Dogs that survive severe heatstroke often require intravenous fluid therapy, monitoring for 24 to 48 hours, and follow-up bloodwork to catch delayed organ injury. The window in which intervention changes the outcome is narrow and closes fast.
The dog that seems to be doing better after you hosed it down may still be in serious danger. Symptoms settling is not the same as temperature settling, and temperature settling is not the same as organ function stabilising.
