Sundarbans tigers are the only population on Earth that regularly swims through saltwater channels, hunts in tidal mangrove forest, and actively predates on humans. These are not quirks, they are evolved responses to one of the most hostile habitats any Bengal tiger has ever had to survive. Here is what the science says about how they got this way.

A Tiger That Drinks Salt Water

Every other tiger population on Earth drinks fresh water. The Sundarbans tigers, living across roughly 10,000 square kilometres of tidal mangrove forest straddling the India-Bangladesh border, regularly drink water with salinity levels that would cause severe dehydration in most large mammals. A 2011 study by the Wildlife Institute of India found that Sundarbans tigers have adapted to tolerate brackish water intake to a degree not documented in any other tiger population. The exact physiological mechanism is still being studied, but the leading hypothesis is that the tigers supplement their water intake through the blood and tissue fluids of their prey, spotted deer, wild boar, and water monitor lizards, which themselves live in the brackish zone. The mangrove forest provides almost no standing fresh water. The tigers stayed anyway, and their kidneys appear to have paid the price in terms of chronic physiological stress, which may partly explain why Sundarbans tigers tend to be smaller in body mass than their counterparts in Ranthambore or Jim Corbett.


They Swim Like No Other Big Cat

Tigers across Asia can swim. What the Sundarbans population does is different in scale and regularity. The tidal channels of the Sundarbans shift constantly, an island accessible at low tide becomes a kilometre of open water at high tide. Sundarbans tigers have been documented swimming distances of up to 30 kilometres between islands, navigating tidal currents that would challenge a strong human swimmer. Camera trap data from the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve in West Bengal shows individual tigers crossing major channels multiple times per week. This is not opportunistic swimming. It is the primary mode of territorial movement. A male tiger's territory in the Sundarbans is defined not by ridgelines or forest edges but by water boundaries, and holding that territory means swimming those boundaries on a regular basis. No other tiger population uses water this way as a structural feature of its home range.


Hunting at the Edge of the Tide

Sundarbans tigers have shifted their predation timing and technique to match the mangrove's rhythms. In most tiger habitats, large prey is taken at waterholes or along forest trails. In the Sundarbans, prey movement is governed by the tide. Spotted deer and wild boar move to the mudflats and channel edges to feed on exposed vegetation and invertebrates at low tide. Sundarbans tigers have learned to position themselves at these tidal edges and ambush from the dense pneumatophore roots of the mangrove, the above-ground root structures that make movement through a mangrove forest so difficult for anything larger than a monitor lizard. A 2019 study published in PLOS ONE, tracking prey availability and tiger activity patterns in the Indian Sundarbans, found that tiger activity peaks correlated significantly with low-tide windows, a pattern absent in inland tiger populations. The mangrove itself is the hunting weapon: the root architecture provides cover that no grassland or dry deciduous forest can replicate.


The Human Predation Question

The Sundarbans is the only place on Earth where tigers regularly and persistently prey on humans. Between 50 and 100 people are killed by tigers in the Indian and Bangladeshi Sundarbans each year, most of them honey collectors, fishermen, and woodcutters who enter the forest for their livelihoods. This is not a function of tigers being particularly aggressive. It is a function of prey density and human access patterns. The Sundarbans has lower densities of large ungulates than most Indian tiger reserves, and the human communities that depend on the forest enter it regularly, moving through the same tidal edges and channel banks where tigers hunt. Research by the Zoological Survey of India has documented that tigers in the Sundarbans show less flight response to human presence than tigers elsewhere, a behavioural shift that develops across generations in a population where humans are a consistent and accessible prey item. Attempts to deter predation using electrified dummy human figures in the 1980s and 1990s had limited long-term effect, which itself tells you something: the behaviour is not easily conditioned away because it is not a learned aberration in individual animals. It runs through the population.



What the Sundarbans Made

The Sundarbans tiger is sometimes described as a subspecies variant, but it is not, it is classified as the same Bengal tiger, Panthera tigris tigris, found in Ranthambore, Pench, and the Terai. What differs is everything the environment has selected for over generations of isolation in one of the most demanding habitats any large predator occupies. Smaller body size, saltwater tolerance, tidal hunting rhythms, swimming as a primary territorial behaviour, and a reduced fear response to humans are not random variations. They are the cumulative signature of a population shaped by a forest that floods twice a day, offers almost no fresh water, and sits at the edge of the Bay of Bengal where cyclones periodically rearrange the land itself. The Sundarbans tiger did not adapt to the mangrove. The mangrove built the tiger it needed.
