How the Pench-Kanha Wildlife Corridor Did More for Tigers Than Decades of Conservation Alone

A strip of degraded forest between Pench and Kanha, two of India's most celebrated tiger reserves, has quietly changed what conservation can achieve. When tigers can move, they do things no protection order ever could: rebuild gene pools, recolonise lost ground, and stabilise populations that were shrinking behind perfectly guarded fences.
The problem with a perfect fence
A male Bengal tiger's home range runs between 60 and 100 square kilometres. Dispersing sub-adults, young males pushed out by dominant residents, may travel more than 650 kilometres looking for unclaimed territory. Inside a reserve, there is nowhere to go. The sub-adult either dies in territorial conflict or turns up near a village. Neither outcome helps the species.
What the corridor actually is
The shift came when researchers began tracking tigers with GPS collars and found that animals were already using it. A tigress radio-collared in Pench in 2009 was recorded moving through agricultural edges and crossing road culverts to reach forest patches closer to Kanha's buffer zone. She was not lost. She was commuting. The corridor was functional before anyone officially called it one.
What made it work was not pristine habitat but connectivity, enough tree cover, enough prey, and enough tolerance from local communities to allow movement without lethal conflict. The Wildlife Conservation Trust and state forest departments began working with villages along the corridor on livestock insurance schemes and predator-proof cattle enclosures. Retaliatory killing dropped. The tigers kept moving.
What movement does that protection cannot
Recolonisation is the other mechanism. When a connected forest patch loses its tigers to disease or conflict, animals from adjacent areas can move in and re-establish the population. An isolated reserve cannot do this. Once its tigers are gone, the habitat sits empty until a managed translocation, an expensive, logistically complex intervention, brings animals back. The corridor makes natural recolonisation possible. It is a biological reset button that costs far less than the alternative.
The villages inside the equation
The compensation and insurance programmes along this corridor are not charity, they are infrastructure. When a farmer in Seoni district files a livestock claim and receives payment within weeks rather than months, the tiger that made the kill does not become a target. The Wildlife Conservation Trust's rapid-compensation model, piloted along this corridor, became a reference point for similar programmes in other tiger landscapes. Human tolerance is a conservation resource with the same operational importance as prey density or water availability. It runs out when it is not replenished.
What this changes about how India thinks about tiger recovery
The Pench-Kanha corridor is evidence that the next phase of tiger conservation in India is a landscape problem, not a reserve problem. The question is no longer only how well a park is protected inside its boundary. It is whether the land between parks allows tigers to function as a connected population across a larger geography. Several other corridors, Corbett-Rajaji in Uttarakhand, the Terai Arc linking forests across the Nepal border, are being mapped and managed with the same logic. The reserve remains essential. But the corridor is what turns a collection of reserves into something that behaves like a wild population.
The fence protected what was there. The corridor let it become something more.
