The Dolphins That Follow the Nets
In Chilika Lake, Odisha's vast brackish lagoon, Irrawaddy dolphins and fishermen have developed a working rhythm that marine biologists have studied for decades. The dolphins herd fish toward the shore and toward the nets. The fishermen, reading the dolphins' movement, cast at the right moment. Both eat. This is not folklore, researchers from the Wildlife Institute of India have documented cooperative fishing behaviour between Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) and local fishers at Chilika, a pattern also recorded independently in Myanmar's Irrawaddy River and in coastal Brazil with bottlenose dolphins. The biological basis is straightforward: dolphins are highly social, echolocating hunters. A net creates a barrier that concentrates fish. The dolphin learns this, and returns.
The fishermen of Chilika call these dolphins by name. Individual animals are recognised across seasons. A dolphin that has fished alongside a family for years is not treated as wild in the way outsiders might imagine, it is treated as a known quantity, a reliable presence in the water.
Gangetic Dolphins and the River Communities of Assam
The Gangetic river dolphin (Platanista gangetica), India's national aquatic animal, is functionally blind. It navigates entirely by echolocation, emitting ultrasonic clicks and reading the return signal with precision sharp enough to detect a fish at close range in zero-visibility water. For fishing communities along the Brahmaputra in Assam, this animal has long been a practical indicator. Where dolphins surface repeatedly, fish are present. The dolphin's movement through a stretch of river is, for an experienced fisherman, a live map of where to drop a line.
The Mising and Deori communities of Assam have traditional prohibitions against harming dolphins. These are not recent conservation policies, they predate any government wildlife legislation by generations. The dolphin appears in the oral traditions of several riverine communities as a protected figure, sometimes associated with the river itself as a living entity. The protection was practical before it was spiritual: a dead dolphin is a lost fishing partner.
How Traditional Knowledge Reads Dolphin Behaviour
Fishermen who have worked alongside dolphins across generations carry a specific, granular knowledge of their behaviour that formal marine science has only recently begun to document systematically. They know that a dolphin surfacing in short, rapid bursts is feeding actively. A dolphin moving in long, slow arcs is travelling. A dolphin that circles back repeatedly to a location is working a school of fish. This reading of dolphin behaviour functions as real-time sonar for communities that have no electronic equipment.
In the Sundarbans, where the tidal creeks shift constantly and navigation is genuinely dangerous, fishermen have reported using dolphin surface patterns to identify deeper channels, the dolphins prefer depth when moving at speed. This is not mysticism. It is applied ethology, accumulated over lifetimes and passed from father to child in the boat.
Where Coexistence Gets Complicated
The relationship is not frictionless. Dolphins steal fish from nets. In Chilika and along stretches of the Ganga, fishermen report significant catch loss to dolphins working the same nets they are supposed to be helping. A 2015 study published in PLOS ONE on human-dolphin conflict in South and Southeast Asia found that net depredation by dolphins is one of the leading causes of tension between marine mammals and small-scale fishing communities globally. In India, the tension is managed largely through traditional norms rather than formal mechanisms, a fisherman who harms a dolphin faces social censure from within the community before he faces any legal consequence.
The shift in this balance has come from outside the relationship. Industrial trawling, river damming, and pollution have reduced fish stocks. When fish are scarce, both the fisherman and the dolphin compete harder for what remains. The coexistence that held for generations was calibrated to a certain abundance. That abundance is no longer guaranteed.
What Conservation Gets Wrong About These Communities
Formal conservation policy in India has often treated fishing communities as threats to dolphins rather than as the primary reason dolphin populations survived in certain areas at all. The Gangetic dolphin's continued presence in stretches of the Brahmaputra is partly attributable to the traditional prohibitions held by communities like the Mising. No government programme created those prohibitions. They existed before the Indian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, before the dolphin was declared a national aquatic animal in 2009, before any NGO arrived with awareness materials.
The more productive conservation approach, increasingly recognised by researchers working with groups like the Aaranyak conservation organisation in Assam, treats traditional fishing communities as knowledge holders and active stakeholders, not as problems to be managed. The fishermen already know where the dolphins are, what they are doing, and when the population is in trouble. That knowledge is a conservation resource. It has been sitting in boats on Indian rivers for centuries.
The coexistence was never a perfect harmony. It was a working arrangement between two species competing for the same resource, each learning to read the other well enough to make the competition productive. What makes it worth studying is not its romance but its durability, and the specific, transmissible knowledge that durability required.
