India's Golden Mahseer Is Critically Endangered: What Is Killing Uttarakhand's Freshwater Giant
The Fish That Ruled India's Rivers
Tor putitora, the golden mahseer, can reach 2.75 metres in length and weigh over 54 kg, making it one of the largest freshwater fish in Asia. It belongs to the cyprinid family, the same broad group as carp, but there is nothing ordinary about it. The scales are large, bronze-gold, and iridescent in moving water. The body is built for fast, cold, oxygen-rich rivers: deep-chested, powerful, with a mouth designed to work rocky riverbeds. In the Himalayan rivers of Uttarakhand, it was the apex freshwater species for millennia.
British colonial records from the 19th century describe mahseer runs in the Ganga, the Ramganga, and the Kosi so dense that local fishing communities could sustain entire seasons on a single stretch. Jim Corbett, who spent decades in Kumaon, wrote of the mahseer with the same reverence he gave to tigers. That abundance is now gone. The IUCN Red List formally classified the golden mahseer as Critically Endangered, the last category before Extinct in the Wild.
What Broke the Population
The golden mahseer is a migratory species. It moves upstream to spawn in cold, gravel-bedded shallows, and the juveniles need clean, fast-flowing water to survive their first year. Every dam on a Himalayan river cuts that migration route. The Tehri Dam on the Bhagirathi, one of the largest rock-fill dams in the world, effectively severed one of the mahseer's most critical spawning corridors in Uttarakhand. Smaller hydropower projects on tributaries of the Alaknanda and the Tons have done the same at a finer scale, dozens of times over.
Overfishing compounded the problem. The mahseer grows slowly. A fish large enough to reproduce takes several years to reach maturity, and the species cannot recover from heavy extraction the way faster-breeding fish can. Illegal netting, dynamite fishing, and the use of poisonous plant extracts, a practice called mahua poisoning, using the fermented residue of Madhuca longifolia, have been documented in river stretches across the Kumaon and Garhwal divisions. Sand mining on riverbanks destroys the gravel beds where the mahseer spawns. Agricultural runoff carrying pesticides lowers dissolved oxygen in water the fish requires at high levels to survive.
The Rivers It Depends On
The mahseer's stronghold in India is the upper Ganga basin, the cold, clear rivers descending from the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas before they warm and slow in the plains. The Ramganga, which flows through Corbett National Park before joining the Ganga near Kannauj, was historically one of the most reliable mahseer rivers in the country. The stretch inside the park, protected from direct human fishing pressure, still holds a remnant population. Outside the park boundary, the fish is functionally absent from large sections of the same river.
The Kosi river of Kumaon, distinct from the much larger Kosi of Bihar, similarly holds small, isolated populations in its upper reaches. The Tons, a tributary of the Yamuna rising near Har-ki-Dun, is another refuge. What these stretches share is protection from the worst of the extraction pressure, not any special biological advantage. The fish survives where people are kept out, not where the habitat is particularly better.
Conservation Efforts and Their Limits
The Mahseer Trust, a UK-based conservation organisation, has worked with the Uttarakhand forest department and local communities on catch-and-release angling programmes, treating sport fishing as a conservation tool rather than a threat. The logic is that a live mahseer has ongoing economic value to a river-guide community, while a dead one has value only once. In several stretches of the Ramganga and the Kali, this model has created local incentives to protect the fish rather than extract it.
The Wildlife Institute of India, based in Dehradun, has conducted population surveys and genetic studies on mahseer stocks in Uttarakhand. Their research identified that what was long treated as a single species is actually a complex of related species, and that captive breeding programmes using the wrong genetic stock had been inadvertently diluting wild populations. Hatchery-reared fish released into rivers without genetic screening do more harm than good when they interbreed with locally adapted wild populations.
The Uttarakhand government has designated certain river stretches as mahseer sanctuaries, prohibiting fishing entirely. Enforcement is inconsistent. A sanctuary designation on paper means little without the ranger presence and community buy-in to make it real on the water.
