The gharial nearly vanished from every river in India. Then one stretch of the Chambal held. What that river did differently, no major dams, protected nesting banks, a joint sanctuary across three states, is the reason this ancient crocodilian still exists at all. Every other river had the species. Only Chambal had the conditions.

A Crocodilian Built for One Thing, Destroyed by Everything Else

The gharial's jaw is so narrow it cannot eat anything larger than a fish. Gavialis gangeticus evolved that way over millions of years, a specialist so refined it cannot pivot. That specialisation is also why it collapsed so fast when India's rivers did. When fish populations dropped, when sandbanks were mined, when water levels became unpredictable, the gharial had no fallback. It couldn't switch prey. It couldn't nest on degraded banks. It simply stopped reproducing.
At its lowest point, the global wild population fell to an estimated 200 individuals in the late 1970s. That number came from the IUCN and field surveys conducted as part of India's Project Crocodile, launched in 1975, one of the earliest government-backed reptile conservation programmes in Asia. The species was listed Critically Endangered. It remains so today, despite partial recovery, because the conditions that caused the collapse have not been fixed in most of its former range.

What the Chambal Has That the Ganga Does Not

The gharial once ranged across the Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, and Mahanadi systems. Today, a viable breeding population exists in essentially one place: the National Chambal Sanctuary, a 435-kilometre protected stretch running through Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
The Chambal is unusual among Indian rivers for reasons that have nothing to do with conservation policy and everything to do with geography and historical accident. The river runs through the ravines of the Chambal valley, terrain so difficult to farm and historically so associated with dacoit activity that large-scale agriculture never colonised its banks the way it did the Gangetic plain. That kept human settlement sparse. Sparse settlement meant fewer fishing nets, less bank disturbance, and crucially, fewer sand-mining operations.
The Chambal also has no major dam on its main channel within the sanctuary zone. Dams alter river hydrology in ways that destroy gharial nesting: they regulate floods that deposit fresh sand, they change water temperatures, and they strand gharials in isolated pools during lean seasons. The Ganga has been impounded, diverted, and drawn down at scale. The Chambal, within the sanctuary, still behaves like a river.

The Sanctuary That Three States Actually Agreed On

The National Chambal Sanctuary is a rare administrative achievement. It is jointly managed by Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, three states that share the river's course and have maintained the sanctuary designation since 1978. Joint management of a linear river habitat across state boundaries is genuinely uncommon in India. Most interstate rivers become contested resources. The Chambal, within this stretch, became a shared protected zone instead.

That protection covers gharial nesting beaches directly. Rangers monitor sandbanks during the nesting season, which runs from March to May. Eggs are sometimes collected for head-starting, raising hatchlings in captivity until they are large enough to survive release, a technique that WWF-India and the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust have both supported at different points in the programme's history. The head-starting approach has been debated among herpetologists: some argue it skews population demographics and reduces wild nesting behaviour. Others point to the raw numbers and say the programme bought the species enough time to stabilise.

Why Other Rivers Failed Even With the Same Species

Gharials were reintroduced into the Ganga, the Son, the Ramganga, and the Ken river systems as part of Project Crocodile. Most of those reintroductions failed. A mass mortality event in 2007 and 2008 killed dozens of gharials in the Chambal and Ganga, post-mortems conducted by wildlife veterinarians identified gout-like visceral lesions, later linked to a combination of environmental stressors including heavy metal accumulation and possible toxin exposure from agricultural runoff. The Chambal population survived that event. The Ganga populations did not recover.
The difference was not species genetics or reintroduction technique. It was habitat quality. The Ganga carries some of the highest pollution loads of any river in the world, industrial effluents, sewage, and agricultural chemicals that accumulate in fish tissue and move up the food chain directly into a fish-eating specialist like the gharial. A crocodilian that eats only fish, in a river where fish are themselves contaminated, has no escape route from bioaccumulation. The Chambal, while not pristine, has significantly lower industrial pollution in its sanctuary stretch than the main Ganga stem.

What the Chambal's Success Actually Proves

The gharial population in the Chambal sanctuary has grown from those near-extinction lows to an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 individuals across all age classes, though mature breeding adults remain far fewer. That recovery is real. It is also fragile in ways the headline number obscures: the population is concentrated in a single river stretch, making it acutely vulnerable to any single catastrophic event, a chemical spill, a drought year, a policy reversal on sand mining.

Sand mining is the most immediate ongoing threat. Licensed and illegal mining operations continue near the sanctuary boundaries. Sand is extracted from the same riverine deposits where gharials nest. A sandbank that is mined in February is not available for nesting in April. The sanctuary designation provides legal protection, but enforcement on a 435-kilometre stretch of river, across three state jurisdictions, is uneven.
The Chambal did not save the gharial through exceptional intervention. It saved it by being, almost by accident, the one river that retained enough of what a gharial actually needs: clean-enough water, undisturbed sandbanks, fish populations, and a river that still floods and recedes on something close to a natural cycle. Every other river in India once had those things. The gharial's range map is, in that sense, a precise record of what each river lost and when.
