India's Most Deadly Snake Is Not the Cobra: The Saw-Scaled Viper Kills More Per Year

At under 60 centimetres long, the saw-scaled viper is the smallest dangerously venomous snake in India, and the deadliest by body count. It does not rear up. It does not warn you. It hides in sand, leaf litter, and farmland across the subcontinent, strikes faster than most reptile species can react, and kills more Indians every year than any cobra ever has.
Small Enough to Miss, Fast Enough to Kill
The second reason is speed. The saw-scaled viper has one of the fastest documented strike speeds of any snake species, it can complete a full strike-and-retract cycle in under half a second. A person who spots the snake and flinches will have been bitten before the flinch is finished.
The third reason is the scales. The species name carinatus means keeled, each scale along the viper's body has a ridge running down its centre. When threatened, the snake coils into a figure-eight and rubs these ridges together, producing a dry, rasping hiss that sounds like tearing paper. Most people who hear it for the first time do not know what it is.
Where It Lives Across India
The snake is nocturnal. It moves after dark, when visibility is low and most rural households have put their torches away. It does not flee from approaching footsteps the way many snakes do. It holds its ground and strikes when contact is made. A person walking to the field before dawn, or returning after dusk, has almost no warning.
What the Venom Does
That delay is lethal. The venom is steadily dismantling the clotting cascade. Within hours, the victim may begin bleeding from the gums, from old wound sites, from the eyes. Internal haemorrhage follows. By the time a rural patient reaches a hospital with antivenom, the window for effective treatment has often closed. A 2019 analysis published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases estimated that snakebite kills between 46,000 and 58,000 Indians per year, with Echis species responsible for the largest share of that mortality.
Why the Death Toll Stays High
Agricultural India puts millions of people in direct contact with this snake's preferred habitat every single day. Antivenom exists and works, but it must be given intravenously in a clinical setting. In districts where the nearest government hospital is two hours away by road, and where a family's first response to a bite is often a tourniquet or a local healer, the antivenom arrives too late or not at all. The snake's hemotoxic mechanism compounds this: the absence of immediate dramatic symptoms means patients and families underestimate the urgency. By the time the bleeding begins, the venom has already done its structural damage.
The saw-scaled viper is not the most venomous snake in India. It is the most consequential one, a function of biology meeting geography meeting the specific conditions of rural Indian life. The bite that looks manageable is the one that goes untreated. That gap, between a small snake in dry scrub and a death in a district hospital, is where most of those 46,000 to 58,000 lives are lost.
