The mugger crocodile, one of India's oldest reptile survivors, is no longer confined to remote rivers. It has moved into irrigation canals, sewage-fed lakes, and city reservoirs across urban India. How a cold-blooded animal is quietly rewriting the rules of wildlife adaptation, and what that means for the people living beside these waterways.

An Ancient Animal in a Changed World

Crocodylus palustris, the mugger crocodile, has been swimming through the Indian subcontinent's rivers for roughly 26 million years. Today, a significant number of them are swimming through sewage-fed lakes on the edges of Ahmedabad, irrigation channels outside Vadodara, and the silted reservoirs that supply water to towns in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The species didn't retreat when humans arrived. It stayed, watched, and adjusted.
The mugger is one of three crocodilian species native to India, alongside the saltwater crocodile and the near-extinct gharial. Unlike the saltwater crocodile, which needs brackish coastal habitat, or the gharial, which requires fast-flowing clear rivers with specific sandbanks for nesting, the mugger is a generalist. It tolerates a wide range of water temperatures, salinity levels, and dissolved oxygen concentrations, a biological flexibility that has made it uniquely capable of surviving in water bodies that most wildlife cannot.

What Urban Waterways Actually Look Like for a Mugger

The waterways muggers now occupy in urban India are not pristine. The Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad, the Mutha River flowing through Pune, the Chambal River tributaries running near Kota, these are all places where mugger sightings have been documented within or immediately adjacent to human settlement. Some of these water bodies receive industrial discharge. Many are heavily fished. Several have concrete embankments that have replaced the natural sloped banks the crocodile traditionally used for basking.
Muggers are ectothermic, they regulate body temperature through external heat sources, which is why basking on exposed banks is not optional behaviour but a metabolic necessity. In urban settings, they have adapted this to concrete ghats, drainage outlet slabs, and even the steps of river-front development projects. A mugger photographed on the steps of a riverfront promenade in Vadodara in recent years was not lost or displaced. It was thermoregulating, exactly as its biology required, on the nearest available flat surface that caught morning sun.

The Behavioural Shifts That Make Urban Survival Possible

Three specific behavioural changes have been documented in muggers living in human-modified habitats. First, their activity patterns have shifted. Muggers in undisturbed habitats are most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Urban muggers increasingly show nocturnal movement, researchers studying populations in Rajasthan's Ramgarh Lake and Gujarat's water bodies have noted that individuals move between water bodies, cross roads, and explore drainage channels predominantly after dark, when human activity drops. This is a learned avoidance response, not an instinctive one.
Second, their diet has broadened. The mugger's natural prey base includes fish, frogs, and occasionally larger mammals that come to drink. Urban muggers consume domestic animals, dogs, goats, and have been recorded scavenging near slaughterhouse discharge points where organic waste enters water bodies. A 2019 study published in the Herpetological Journal examining mugger diet through stomach content analysis and stable isotope data found measurable shifts in the trophic signatures of urban-adjacent crocodiles compared to those in protected areas, confirming dietary opportunism at a population level.

Third, nesting site selection has changed. Muggers require loose soil or sand above the flood line for nest construction. In urban areas, where natural banks have been replaced by concrete, females have been recorded nesting in municipal park lawns, construction site soil dumps, and the earthen berms of check dams, any available loose substrate within reach of water.

The Human Side of This Coexistence

India's mugger population, estimated at between 5,000 and 10,000 individuals by the IUCN, recovered significantly after the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 banned hunting. That recovery has pushed crocodiles back into water bodies they had been absent from for decades, water bodies that now have cities around them. The result is a coexistence that is neither designed nor managed in most places.
In Gujarat, the Forest Department runs one of the more active human-crocodile conflict mitigation programmes in the country, including rapid response teams that relocate muggers found in residential areas and a public awareness campaign that has measurably reduced retaliatory killings. In other states, the response is ad hoc. Muggers that wander into populated areas are sometimes killed before any authority can respond.

The deeper problem is that urban water body management in India almost never accounts for crocodile presence. Riverfront beautification projects, Sabarmati in Ahmedabad being the most cited example, transform the sloped, vegetated banks that muggers use for basking and nesting into vertical concrete walls. The crocodile doesn't disappear. It finds the next available surface, which is sometimes a boat ramp, sometimes a temple ghat, sometimes a place where children swim.
The mugger's capacity to persist through these changes is not a sign that everything is fine. A species that can eat dogs and nest in a construction site is demonstrating ecological stress as much as ecological resilience.

What This Means for Urban Wildlife Policy

The mugger crocodile's urban presence forces a specific question that Indian wildlife management has not fully answered: what does coexistence actually require in a built environment? Protected area logic, fence it off, keep humans out, does not apply when the animal is already inside the city, using the city's infrastructure, and has no intention of leaving.

Some answers are already visible in practice. Retaining or restoring even short stretches of natural bank within urban river corridors gives muggers basking and nesting habitat that reduces the pressure to use human-use areas. Seasonal signage at water bodies with known mugger populations, a low-cost intervention, has been shown to reduce dangerous human-crocodile proximity in Gujarat. Early warning systems tied to Forest Department rapid response have cut incident response time in districts where they operate.
None of this requires treating the mugger as a problem to be solved. The crocodile was in these rivers before the cities arrived. The cities arrived, the rivers changed, and the crocodile adapted. The question is whether the cities are willing to adapt back, even slightly, to make room for an animal that has already made room for them.
The mugger's success in urban waterways is not evidence of a species thriving. It is evidence of a species doing what 26 million years of survival has trained it to do: find the minimum viable conditions and hold on. The cities that learn to read that distinction, between persistence and flourishing, will be the ones that manage this coexistence without waiting for a fatality to force the conversation.
