The striped hyena is India's most misread wildlife species, not a predator, but a scavenger that does something no other Indian animal can. It consumes disease-ridden carcasses, including those infected with anthrax, and its gut destroys the pathogens before they re-enter the soil. Without this hyena, India's wild and semi-wild landscapes carry a measurably higher disease load.

The stomach that stops an outbreak

The striped hyena has the most acidic digestive system of any land mammal studied, a gastric pH that drops as low as 1.7, comparable to concentrated battery acid. A 2017 paper published in the journal Integrative Zoology confirmed that this acidity allows hyenas to neutralise anthrax spores, Clostridium botulinum, and tuberculosis-causing Mycobacterium bovis in carcass tissue that would kill or severely sicken most other scavengers. The bones of a dead nilgai or feral donkey, left in open scrubland, carry enough pathogen load to contaminate groundwater and infect grazing livestock for months. The striped hyena consumes the entire carcass, bones included, and what exits is rendered biologically inert.
This is not incidental. It is the animal's primary ecological function, and India has exactly one hyena species doing this work.

Where the striped hyena actually lives in India

Hyaena hyaena, the striped hyena, ranges across the dry Deccan plateau, the scrub forests of Rajasthan and Gujarat, the semi-arid zones of Madhya Pradesh, and parts of the Aravalli hills. The Wildlife Institute of India has recorded populations in at least 19 states, though density surveys remain thin. The species is nocturnal and extraordinarily shy, which is why most Indians living within its range have never seen one despite sharing the same landscape for millennia. Camera trap data from the Ranthambore buffer zone and the Banni grasslands of Kutch show the animal moving through areas dense with livestock, dead cattle, and agricultural waste, precisely the zones where disease pressure is highest.
Unlike the spotted hyena of sub-Saharan Africa, the striped hyena is a solitary scavenger. It does not hunt in packs. A single adult covers a home range of roughly 30 to 72 square kilometres per night, and across that range it is locating and consuming carrion that no other predator or decomposition agent would touch.

What happens when the hyena disappears

The Vulture Crisis of the 1990s and early 2000s offers the clearest available data on what a scavenger collapse does to disease load. When diclofenac poisoning killed an estimated 97 to 99 percent of India's Gyps vulture population, documented in a 2004 study by Oaks et al. in Nature, feral dog populations exploded to fill the carrion gap. Rabies transmission rates in affected districts rose sharply. Anthrax outbreaks in livestock increased in zones where vulture populations had collapsed most severely. The striped hyena was always part of the same scavenger guild as those vultures, and its decline, the IUCN lists it as Near Threatened, with Indian populations under pressure from road kills, poisoned bait set for wolves, and habitat fragmentation, removes a second layer of the same system.
A landscape that loses its scavengers does not simply smell worse. It becomes epidemiologically different. The carcass that a hyena would have stripped and rendered harmless in a single night instead sits for days, drawing flies, contaminating soil, and leaching into seasonal streams that feed village wells.

The misidentification problem

The striped hyena is routinely killed in India because farmers mistake it for a livestock predator. Field studies by the Wildlife Conservation Trust and independent researchers working in Maharashtra and Karnataka have found that the species almost never kills healthy livestock. Stomach content analyses from road-killed individuals consistently show bones, hair, and hooves, the remnants of animals already dead, not killed. The striped hyena is a scavenger, not a predator in any meaningful ecological sense, and the persecution it faces is built on a misreading of its behaviour.
This matters because the animal's value to the landscape is entirely tied to its role as a decomposition specialist. Remove the perceived threat and you still have a species that is being poisoned and trapped at a rate that outpaces its reproductive capacity, the striped hyena produces litters of one to five cubs, with a gestation of around 90 days, and cubs remain dependent for over a year.

The specific thing India stands to lose

No other Indian wildlife species replicates what the striped hyena does at the pathogen level. Jackals and feral dogs consume soft tissue but cannot process bone or destroy the bacterial load within it. Vultures, where they still exist, handle soft tissue efficiently but leave the skeleton. The hyena consumes everything, and the gut chemistry that makes this possible took millions of years of evolutionary pressure to produce. Decomposition of a large mammal carcass in the absence of a bone-crushing scavenger takes weeks and leaves a contamination window that shorter-lived decomposers cannot close.
The striped hyena is not a charismatic species. It does not appear on wildlife tourism brochures. It generates no conservation funding comparable to the tiger or the elephant. The disease suppression it provides is invisible precisely because it works, the outbreak that doesn't happen leaves no data trail, only a landscape that stays cleaner than it has any right to be.
