They look nearly identical at a glance, but the lesser flamingo and the greater flamingo are separated by biology, diet, and survival strategy. Across India, from Mumbai's Sewri mudflats to Gujarat's Rann, lesser flamingos have colonised sewage treatment ponds in numbers that surprise even ornithologists. The pink spectacle is real, and the reason behind it is stranger than it sounds.

Two birds, one glance, and where the differences actually are

Stand at the edge of Thane Creek on a winter morning and you will see tens of thousands of flamingos turning the water pink. What you almost certainly won't do, without a field guide and some patience, is correctly sort them into two separate species.


The greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the taller of the two, reaching up to 145 cm. Its plumage is pale, almost white, with a wash of pink concentrated at the wing coverts. The bill is mostly pale pink with a black tip. The lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) stands roughly 90 cm tall, has noticeably deeper pink plumage across the body, and carries a dark crimson-red bill that looks almost maroon from a distance. In a mixed flock, size is the fastest tell, but in the chaos of 50,000 birds, size is relative to what's standing next to what.


The two species belong to different genera entirely. That taxonomic separation reflects something deeper than colour: they have evolved to eat different things, in different layers of the same water.


The bill that no other flamingo has

The lesser flamingo possesses one of the most specialised feeding structures in the avian world. Its bill has a deep keel, a pronounced ridge running along the lower mandible, that creates an extraordinarily fine filtration system. When the bird holds its bill upside-down in the water and pumps its fleshy tongue up to four times per second, it can filter particles as small as 20 to 65 micrometres. The primary target is cyanobacteria, specifically Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis and related species), a blue-green algae that forms dense blooms in warm, alkaline, nutrient-rich water.



The greater flamingo, by contrast, feeds on invertebrates, small crustaceans, diatoms, and organic matter in the sediment. Its filtration plates are coarser. It works the mud. The lesser flamingo works the water column, skimming the surface bloom.


This difference in diet is not incidental, it is the entire reason the lesser flamingo ends up in places the greater flamingo does not. Spirulina blooms where nitrogen and phosphorus are high, where the water is warm and shallow and alkaline. Sewage treatment ponds, as it happens, are exactly that.



The accidental ecology of sewage ponds

Sewage treatment plants were not designed with flamingos in mind. The secondary and tertiary treatment ponds in facilities around Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and other Indian cities create standing bodies of warm, nutrient-saturated, shallow water. Sunlight, nitrogen from effluent, and high pH together produce the conditions in which cyanobacteria thrive. The lesser flamingo's bill evolved for precisely this chemistry.


The Flamingo City colony near Navi Mumbai's JNPT area, a stretch of mudflats and treatment ponds that has hosted well over 100,000 birds in peak season, is one of the most documented examples. The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) has tracked this congregation since the 1990s, and the numbers have grown as the urban wetland footprint expanded alongside Mumbai's infrastructure. Sewri in south Mumbai, where flamingos feed on the mudflats during low tide and move to nearby treatment ponds, draws birdwatchers from across the country between November and May.



The birds are not confused. They are finding food. The sewage pond is not a degraded habitat they have settled for, it is an environment that replicates, in chemistry if not in aesthetics, the soda lakes of East Africa where the species evolved. Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria in Kenya hold millions of lesser flamingos for the same reason: extreme alkalinity, shallow depth, Spirulina blooms. The treatment pond outside Navi Mumbai is a chemical cousin of Nakuru, built by accident over decades of urban drainage.


India's flamingo geography and the migration picture

India's lesser flamingos are not a single resident population. The birds that winter on the Sewri mudflats and Thane Creek breed primarily at the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, one of only a handful of lesser flamingo breeding sites in the world, and the only confirmed one in South Asia. The Rann's vast salt flats, flooded seasonally and hostile to most predators, provide the isolation the species needs to nest. Chicks are raised on crèches of thousands, guarded communally.



After breeding, the birds disperse across peninsular India. They appear at Pulicat Lake in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, at Chilika Lake in Odisha, at Nal Sarovar in Gujarat, and at treatment ponds, salt pans, and reservoirs across Maharashtra and Karnataka. The greater flamingo follows a broadly similar route but in smaller numbers and with less dependence on any single food source, which makes it less concentrated and less spectacular in any one location.


The IUCN lists the lesser flamingo as Near Threatened. The global population is estimated at 2.2 to 3.3 million birds, making it the most numerous flamingo species on earth, but that number masks a vulnerability. The species breeds at very few sites. A single bad monsoon over the Rann, or a sustained algal crash at a key wintering ground, can affect a significant fraction of the world population in one season.


What the sewage pond tells us about the bird

The lesser flamingo's presence in India's treatment ponds is sometimes reported as a conservation paradox: a threatened species thriving in polluted water. The framing misses the biology. The bird is not tolerating pollution, it is exploiting a specific nutrient profile that its bill is built to harvest. The sewage pond is productive habitat for Spirulina. The flamingo is doing exactly what it has always done.


What the sewage pond actually reveals is how narrow the lesser flamingo's ecological requirements are. It needs shallow, warm, alkaline, nutrient-rich water with a reliable Spirulina bloom. In a world where natural soda lakes are shrinking under climate pressure and catchment change, the species has found that human infrastructure sometimes replicates the chemistry it needs. The Rann of Kutch, the treatment ponds of Navi Mumbai, and the soda lakes of East Africa are, from the bird's perspective, variations on the same solution. The flamingo does not distinguish between the natural and the engineered. It reads the water.
