What dal and roti actually contribute
Dal, whether toor, moong, or masoor, delivers plant protein, B vitamins, and soluble fibre. For a dog eating a plain, unsalted version, that protein does count toward daily requirements. A medium-sized dog needs roughly 18 to 25 grams of protein per 100 grams of dry food matter, per AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) guidelines. Dal protein is digestible, though its amino acid profile is incomplete compared to animal-source protein. Roti made from atta contributes carbohydrates and some iron, but dogs have no dietary requirement for carbohydrates the way humans do. Their digestive systems can process starch, but carbs are not doing essential metabolic work the way protein and fat are. Rice, often mixed in, is the most digestible component of the typical Indian home meal for dogs, it is bland, low in fibre, and easy on the gut, which is why vets routinely recommend plain rice and boiled chicken during digestive upset.
The protein quality problem
Dogs are facultative carnivores. Their protein needs are best met by animal-sourced amino acids, and two in particular matter here: taurine and L-carnitine. Dogs can synthesize taurine from methionine and cysteine, but only in limited quantities, and breeds like Golden Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, and Dobermans have shown clinically documented deficiency when fed grain-heavy or legume-heavy diets over time. The US FDA flagged this connection between legume-dominant diets and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs in a 2018 investigation. A dal-and-roti diet, absent any meat or eggs, puts dogs in exactly this risk zone. The fix is not complicated: one or two eggs a day, or 100 to 150 grams of boiled chicken or mutton, closes most of the amino acid gap for a medium-sized dog.
Calcium, phosphorus, and the bone problem
The ratio of calcium to phosphorus in a dog's diet must stay close to 1.2:1. Dal is relatively high in phosphorus and low in calcium. Roti and rice add more phosphorus. A dog eating primarily these foods, with no dairy and no raw or cooked bone, is running a chronically low-calcium, high-phosphorus diet. Over months, this pulls calcium from bones to maintain blood levels, a process called nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism. It shows up first as joint pain and lethargy, and in puppies it can cause skeletal deformities. Plain dahi (curd) or a small amount of paneer added daily is one of the simplest calcium corrections available in an Indian kitchen. Raw chicken necks or soft lamb bones serve the same purpose and add animal protein simultaneously.
The nutrients a home diet almost never provides
Three deficiencies are nearly universal in Indian home-fed dogs, and none of them are obvious from looking at the meal.
Vitamin D: Dogs synthesize very little vitamin D through skin exposure to sunlight, unlike humans. They depend almost entirely on dietary sources, primarily fatty fish and organ meat. Dal, roti, and rice contain negligible vitamin D. Deficiency affects bone mineralisation and immune function.
Omega-3 fatty acids: The standard Indian home diet has almost no EPA or DHA, the long-chain omega-3s dogs need for skin, coat, joint, and cardiac health. ALA from flaxseed, sometimes added to rotis, does not convert efficiently to EPA and DHA in dogs. Sardines packed in water, or a fish oil capsule, are the most practical additions.
Zinc: Phytic acid in whole wheat and legumes binds zinc and reduces its absorption. A dog eating roti and dal daily may be consuming adequate zinc on paper but absorbing significantly less. Zinc deficiency in dogs presents as dry, flaky skin, hair loss around the face and paws, and slow wound healing, symptoms that owners frequently attribute to allergies or mange.
The salt and spice hazard
The single most immediate risk of feeding dogs from the family pot is sodium. Indian cooking is salted for human palatability, and dogs require dramatically less sodium than humans do. A dog weighing 10 kg needs roughly 100 mg of sodium per day. A single chapati made with salted dough can contain 200 to 300 mg. Cumulative excess sodium strains the kidneys and, in dogs with pre-existing cardiac conditions, accelerates fluid retention. Spices compound the problem differently: garlic and onion, present in nearly every Indian tadka, are toxic to dogs at any dose. Both contain thiosulfates and organosulfur compounds that damage canine red blood cells, causing haemolytic anaemia. The toxicity is cumulative, small daily amounts over weeks cause the same damage as a single large dose. A dog eating dal made with a standard onion-tomato-garlic base is being harmed slowly, without any single meal looking like a crisis.
The picture that emerges from all of this is not that Indian home food is wrong for dogs, but that it was designed for a different digestive system entirely. Dal gives protein but not the right amino acids. Roti gives carbohydrates a dog does not need and phytates that block what it does. The nutrients missing from this diet are not obscure, they are the ones animal-sourced food would have provided automatically. A dog eating from an Indian kitchen needs the family meal adjusted, not replaced: unsalted, garlic-free, with an egg or some fish added daily. The gap between what that bowl looks like and what it actually delivers is where most of the damage happens.
