The debate around sterilisation in cats and dogs has moved well past the question of whether, it is now about when. New research on hormones and long-term health is changing how vets think about timing, and most of what pet owners believe about behaviour changes after spaying or neutering turns out to be wrong.

The timing question has a more complicated answer than most vets used to give

For decades, the standard advice in India and globally was simple: sterilise your dog or cat at six months, before the first heat cycle. That recommendation was built on population control logic, not individual health outcomes. The science has since caught up, and it tells a messier story.A large-scale study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science in 2020, drawing on data from 35 dog breeds, found that the optimal age for neutering varied significantly by breed and sex. For Golden Retrievers, neutering before 12 months was associated with higher rates of joint disorders and certain cancers. For smaller breeds, early neutering carried far fewer risks. The one-size-at-six-months rule does not hold across the board.For cats, the calculus is different. The Indian street cat population and the pressure on shelters means early sterilisation, even at four months, a practice called paediatric or early-age spaying, is widely supported by veterinary bodies including the American Association of Feline Practitioners. Cats reach sexual maturity between four and six months. A female cat can have three litters a year. The biological urgency is real.

What sterilisation actually does inside the body

Spaying removes the ovaries and usually the uterus. Neutering removes the testes. Both procedures eliminate the primary sources of sex hormones: oestrogen and progesterone in females, testosterone in males. These hormones do not only govern reproduction. They regulate bone density, muscle mass, metabolic rate, and certain immune responses.This is the biological fact that changes the health conversation: sex hormones influence the closure of growth plates in long bones. Dogs neutered before those plates close, typically between 12 and 18 months in large breeds, can develop slightly different skeletal proportions. In breeds already prone to hip dysplasia, such as Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds, this matters. In a Dachshund or a Beagle, it matters far less.For female dogs, spaying before the first heat reduces the lifetime risk of mammary tumours by roughly 99.5 percent, according to data cited in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Mammary cancer is the most common tumour in intact female dogs. That single statistic has driven early spaying recommendations for years, and it remains clinically significant.

Health outcomes: what the evidence actually supports

The honest summary of the research is this: sterilisation reduces some health risks and raises others, and the balance depends on species, breed, size, and sex.For cats, the health case for sterilisation is strong across the board. Intact male cats are prone to urine spraying, roaming, and fight injuries that introduce FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). Intact females face pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection, and repeated heat cycles that are physiologically stressful. The risks of staying intact outweigh the hormonal benefits for almost every cat.For dogs, the picture is more divided. A 2013 study in PLOS ONE by Torres de la Riva and colleagues found that in Golden Retrievers, early neutering (before 12 months) was associated with a fourfold increase in the incidence of mast cell tumours and hemangiosarcoma in females. A later 2020 study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science expanded this to other breeds and found the risk profile was breed-specific, not universal. Rottweilers and Vizslas showed elevated cancer risk with early neutering. Beagles and Border Collies did not.The practical takeaway for dog owners in India: talk to your vet about your dog's specific breed before defaulting to six months. For most indie dogs (INDogs) and smaller mixed breeds, early sterilisation carries minimal documented risk and significant population-management benefit.

The behaviour myths that refuse to die

The most persistent myth is that sterilisation calms an aggressive dog. It does not, reliably. Testosterone-driven behaviours, roaming, urine marking, mounting, do reduce after neutering in many males, particularly if neutered before those behaviours become habitual. But aggression in dogs is primarily learned and fear-based, not hormonal. A dog that bites will not stop biting because its testes are gone.The second myth is that a female dog or cat should have one litter before being spayed, for her health or temperament. No peer-reviewed evidence supports this. The idea appears to come from a misread of maternal bonding behaviour. Allowing a litter before spaying increases mammary tumour risk slightly and adds to the stray animal population.The third myth is that sterilised pets inevitably become obese. Sterilisation does lower metabolic rate modestly, neutered cats burn roughly 30 percent fewer calories than intact cats, according to research published in the British Journal of Nutrition. That is a diet management issue, not a surgical inevitability. Adjust the food quantity. The weight gain is not automatic.What sterilisation does reliably change: urine spraying in male cats drops sharply. Inter-male aggression in dogs reduces. Heat-cycle-related vocalisation and restlessness in female cats disappears. These are genuine, consistent behavioural outcomes. The rest is owner projection.The evidence does not point to one right answer for every animal. It points to a decision that should weigh species, breed size, individual health history, and living situation, and that should be made with a vet who knows the specific animal, not from a general rule that was designed for shelters and applied everywhere else.
