The dachshund was built for a purpose, hunting badgers underground, and its spine paid the price. Centuries of selective breeding compressed a dog into a shape that serves human need first and canine health second. The history of this breed is not a quirk of dog fancy. It is a case study in how domestication rewires animals from the inside out.
A Dog Designed Like a Tool
This was selective breeding at its most deliberate. Hunters did not choose dogs they found beautiful. They chose dogs that worked. Over generations, that pressure produced an animal whose entire skeletal structure was optimised for a single job most dachshunds alive today will never perform.
The Gene That Made the Shape
The problem is that chondrodystrophy does not only affect the legs. It also changes the composition of the intervertebral discs in the spine, making them harder and more brittle than they should be. A healthy disc is a cushion. A chondrodystrophic disc is closer to a calcified pebble. When it ruptures, and in dachshunds, it ruptures at a far higher rate than in other breeds, it can press against the spinal cord and cause partial or complete paralysis. Research published in the journal Veterinary Surgery has found that dachshunds account for nearly 45 to 50 percent of all cases of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) seen in dogs, despite being a fraction of the total dog population. The breed's most recognisable feature and its most serious health liability share the same genetic root.
How Domestication Works on a Body
Charles Darwin observed in The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication that domestic breeds diverge from their wild ancestors far more rapidly than wild populations diverge from each other. The reason is that natural selection works on survival across an entire environment, while artificial selection works on one or two traits a human wants, hard and fast. The dachshund's spine is what that speed looks like in bone.
Dogs as a species are the oldest domesticated animal, with genetic evidence placing the domestication event somewhere between 15,000 and 40,000 years ago. But the extreme breed shapes most people recognise today, the flat face of the bulldog, the barrel chest of the pug, the elongated back of the dachshund, are largely products of the last 200 years, when kennel clubs began standardising breed appearances and show conformation became a goal alongside working function. The dachshund's show standard, formalised in Germany in 1879, locked in proportions that the original hunting dogs had arrived at gradually. Once those proportions became the definition of the breed rather than a consequence of the work, the pressure to maintain them became disconnected from any functional test.
What Breed Standards Actually Select For
This is where the history of the dachshund becomes a question about the mechanics of human preference. When hunters selected for a low, long dog, they got immediate feedback: did the dog do the job or not? A dog that couldn't dig, couldn't hold a badger, or couldn't fit in the burrow was not bred. The selection pressure had a functional check built in. When show breeders selected for the same visual profile, that functional check disappeared. The dog that wins at a conformation show is the one whose measurements best match the written standard, not the one whose spine is most durable.
Several European countries, including Norway, have moved to restrict the breeding of dogs with extreme conformations on animal welfare grounds. Norway's ban on breeding dachshunds with the most exaggerated proportions, introduced in 2022, was the first of its kind and remains contested. It is a direct argument about who gets to define what a breed is: the written standard, or the animal's capacity to live without chronic pain.
The Dachshund as a Mirror
The dachshund's history does not argue against keeping dogs or against the human-animal bond that domestication made possible. It argues for honesty about what selective breeding is: a sustained act of human will applied to another species' body. Every trait that makes a dachshund look like a dachshund was chosen by a person, for a reason, with consequences that the dog carries in its spine for the rest of its life.
The badger is long gone from the equation. What remains is the shape the badger required, maintained now by preference alone, and the disc disease that came with it, quietly accumulating in the breed's genome while the ribbons kept getting pinned.
