The Nilgiri Tahr lives on a strip of high-altitude grassland in the Western Ghats and nowhere else, not in captivity elsewhere, not in any other mountain range on the planet. That extreme endemism is both what makes this endangered ungulate extraordinary and exactly what makes its conservation so precarious. Lose the Ghats, and there is no backup population anywhere.

A mountain goat with no second home

The Nilgiri Tahr, Nilgiritragus hylocrius, occupies roughly 400 square kilometres of montane grassland called sholas, scattered across the upper Western Ghats between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. No other wild population exists anywhere else on the planet. Unlike the Himalayan Tahr or the Arabian Tahr, which are separate species spread across broader ranges, the Nilgiri Tahr's entire species range fits inside a region smaller than many Indian districts. That is the biological fact that defines everything about its survival odds.
Endemism of this kind, where a species is confined to a single, geographically bounded habitat, is not unusual in the Western Ghats, which is one of the world's eight hottest biodiversity hotspots. The Ghats have been isolated from other major mountain systems long enough for evolution to produce hundreds of species found nowhere else. The Nilgiri Tahr is among the most visible of them: a stocky, dark-coated ungulate with curved horns and a distinctive pale saddle patch on the back of adult males. Males weigh up to 100 kilograms. Females are considerably smaller, rarely exceeding 50 kilograms. They are not a shy animal, herds are regularly spotted by trekkers in Eravikulam National Park in Kerala, which holds the largest single population of the species.

What the science says about the population

A 2015 census conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India estimated the total wild population at around 3,122 individuals. Eravikulam alone accounted for more than 700 of those. The numbers look stable compared to the species' near-collapse in the early 20th century, when unrestricted hunting by British planters and local poachers drove the Tahr to the edge of extinction across much of its range. Conservation efforts, particularly the protection of Eravikulam after it became a national park in 1978, allowed populations to recover in some pockets.
But 3,122 individuals spread across fragmented patches of habitat is not a comfortable number for a species with no other population anywhere. Conservation biology has a concept called the minimum viable population, the smallest group size at which a species retains enough genetic diversity and demographic resilience to survive long-term disturbances. For large mammals, estimates typically run into the low thousands at minimum. The Nilgiri Tahr sits uncomfortably close to that threshold, and its populations are not one continuous group. They are isolated clusters separated by tea estates, eucalyptus plantations, and roads. Genetic exchange between clusters is limited.

The specific threats that endemism amplifies

Any threat that affects the Western Ghats affects the entire species. There is no reservoir population in another country or another range to replenish losses. Three pressures are currently doing the most damage.

Habitat loss from plantation expansion remains the most consistent threat. The upper Ghats were heavily converted to tea and coffee cultivation through the 19th and 20th centuries. Shola grasslands that the Tahr depends on for grazing were cleared or degraded. Recovery of those grasslands is slow even where protection exists, because invasive species, particularly wattle, introduced from Australia, colonise open ground faster than native grasses can re-establish.
Climate pressure is newer and harder to model. The Nilgiri Tahr is a high-altitude specialist. Its thermoregulation, its reproductive cycles, and its grazing patterns are tuned to the cool, mist-heavy conditions of elevations above 1,800 metres. As temperatures in the Western Ghats rise and rainfall patterns shift, the narrow band of suitable habitat could compress further upward, and there is no further upward to go. The peaks are already the ceiling.

Disease risk is the third pressure, and the one that endemism makes most dangerous. A single epidemic moving through a small, genetically similar, geographically concentrated population can remove a significant fraction of the species in one season. The Nilgiri Tahr has no geographic buffer. An outbreak in Eravikulam would hit the largest single population directly.

What conservation has actually achieved, and where it stalls

The Tamil Nadu government launched Project Nilgiri Tahr in 2022, committing to a census, habitat restoration across identified corridors, and community engagement with villages on the edges of protected areas. The project is the first state-level initiative specifically focused on the species. Satellite collaring of individuals in some areas has begun to map movement patterns and identify where habitat corridors between fragmented populations might be restored.
Eravikulam's success demonstrates that protection works when it is enforced consistently. The park's Tahr population has grown steadily since the 1980s. The problem is that Eravikulam is the exception. Outside a handful of protected areas, Mukurthi National Park in Tamil Nadu, the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, parts of the Palani Hills, the Tahr exists in unprotected or poorly monitored terrain where encroachment, poaching, and disturbance continue without systematic check.

Corridor restoration between these patches is the most consequential intervention available. A connected population is genetically healthier and more resilient to local disasters than a set of isolated ones. The science on this is consistent across large mammal conservation globally. The difficulty in the Ghats is that the land between protected patches is not wilderness, it is working agricultural land, much of it privately owned, with communities whose livelihoods depend on it.
The Nilgiri Tahr's endemism means that its conservation cannot be outsourced, borrowed from another country's population, or offset by a captive breeding programme in a zoo elsewhere. The animal exists in one place. The decisions made about that place, about plantation boundaries, about corridor land acquisition, about climate adaptation in the Ghats, are the decisions that determine whether the species persists. Every other mountain goat in the world has somewhere else to be. This one does not.
