Rhesus macaques have colonised Delhi, Shimla, and Varanasi not by accident but by biology. Their feeding flexibility and social intelligence make urban India a near-perfect habitat. Understanding what actually drives monkey conflict, and what the evidence says works, changes how cities and residents can respond without making the problem worse.
The biology that makes rhesus macaques so good at city life
Their social structure amplifies this advantage. Troops are hierarchical and coordinated. When one animal finds a reliable food source, the troop exploits it systematically. A single temple that distributes bananas daily can anchor a troop of thirty to forty animals to a single city block for years. The monkeys are not wandering opportunists. They are mapping resources and defending them.
Rhesus macaques also habituate to human presence faster than almost any other primate. Research from the Wildlife Institute of India has documented troops in Agra and Jaipur that show no flight response to pedestrians at distances under two metres, a threshold that would trigger retreat in forest populations of the same species.
Why human feeding behaviour is the core driver
The mechanism is straightforward conditioning. A monkey that has been fed by hand fifty times will approach a human hand expecting food. When the hand is empty, the animal escalates. Biting incidents in Delhi's government quarters cluster almost entirely around areas with documented regular feeding, not around areas where monkeys simply pass through.
Seasonal food scarcity sharpens this. In the dry months before the mango season, when urban trees produce little, troops that have been conditioned to human food become more aggressive in seeking it. The conflict spike is predictable and has been documented by the Delhi government's own wildlife reports.
What the evidence says about reducing conflict
Sterilisation programs have a documented record in Himachal Pradesh. The state ran large-scale vasectomy and tubectomy camps for rhesus populations through the 2000s and 2010s, and population growth in treated areas slowed measurably. The limitation: sterilisation addresses population size over a generation, not immediate conflict behaviour. A sterilised monkey that has been conditioned to human food is still a conflict-prone monkey today.
Habitat modification, specifically, removing or securing food waste at source, produces faster behavioural change than either of the above. Municipalities that switched to closed waste bins in monkey-dense areas in Jaipur's walled city reported a measurable drop in troop residency within two monsoon cycles. Monkeys are efficient foragers. When a location stops yielding calories, they reassign it in their mental maps relatively quickly.
The temple and religious context
Several wildlife NGOs working in Rajasthan have had more success reframing the ask: rather than prohibiting feeding, they work with temple trusts to shift offerings from bananas and peanuts, both high in simple sugars and strongly reinforcing to macaque behaviour, to foods that are less immediately rewarding and therefore less likely to condition approach behaviour. This is imperfect, but it works within the existing social context rather than against it.
The more durable solution involves temple management itself. Temples in Tirupati and Vrindavan that have introduced structured, time-limited feeding zones with designated staff have seen a reduction in uncontrolled troop movement through the main visitor areas. The monkeys still feed. They feed in one place, at one time, which makes the interaction predictable and reduces the ambient aggression that comes from constant competition for scattered handouts.
The conflict between Indian cities and their monkey populations is not a wildlife problem that has gotten out of hand. It is a feedback loop that humans built, piece by piece, through individually reasonable acts, the banana at the temple gate, the leftover roti on the terrace wall, the open municipal bin. Solving it requires intervening in that loop at multiple points simultaneously, because fixing only one link leaves the rest of the circuit intact.
