A man.
Atheists often face misconceptions in the society, from being labeled as immoral to secretly believing in God. This article is w busts eight common myths, revealing how atheists live ethical, purpose-driven lives without religion. It’s time to separate fact from fiction and understand that morality, meaning, and happiness aren’t exclusive to faith.
A major sect of the human society around the world is either religious or affiliated to the concept of religion in some way or the other. However, the people who lead their lives based on rationality and logic are largely shifting towards the ideas of agnosticism or complete atheism. The philosophies that reject the influence of religion in the present day world with a secular thought are finding their right place in multiple societies, such as Japan, Netherlands or even Sweden.

However, as Atheists, one has to go through a lot of stereotypes that the society, primarily the religious community sets up in not only their own minds, but also the ones around them.

Here are 8 Common Myths about Atheists, BUSTED:

1: Atheists Have No Morals

Well, why is this even a thought? Morals are shaped by emotions, empathy, norms and rational thinking. Morals of the nonbelievers are free from any fear of punishments or greed of rewards, and if they do good, it is out of their conscience and emotional reaction to situations.

Atheists can be just as moral and ethical, if not more, than religious individuals.

2: Atheists are Arrogant and Think They Know Everything

If thought from an Atheist perspective, this is one point they rather have for the fundamentalists. Atheists say that they’re curious people, they want to keep learning and as they say, the more you learn, the more you realise how less you know, for knowledge is an ocean as vast as the universe. The reality is that atheists simply follow logic, skepticism, and evidence based thinking, and this, is NOT arrogance.

3: Atheists Hate God

Imagine you living on a building of 4 floors and believing in a neighbour who lives on the 6th floor. A friend of yours (obviously atheist) counters you saying there’s no 6th floor on your building, and you presume he apparently hates your neighbour. Atheists cannot hate someone they do not believe exists, and hence, this is a huge myth amongst the religious sect that builds another false image about the nonbelievers.

4: Atheists are Less & Insignificant

Not true. Rationality and rebellion for logic has always existed in the human society, straight from the times of Brihaspati, who led the Charvaka Movement, to Galileo Galilei who had a conflict with the church for not interfering in scientific matters despite himself being religious, and even the Sikh Gurus who advocated for secular thought and oneness of mankind, rebelling against blind faiths of superstitious thought. In today’s age, rationality of people can afford the advocacy of agnosticism or atheism, considering how far the human society has come, and such humans are finding the right place in advanced regions like New Zealand, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands etc.

5: Atheists are Cold and Lack Spirituality

Just because atheists do not believe in god, does not mean they lack emotional purity. They do feel awe, wonder, or deep emotions. Many atheists appreciate the beauty of life, complexity of human consciousness, the vastness of the universe without attributing it to a deity or any other presumed concept without evidence.

6: Atheists Have No Purpose in Life

Why is it that knowing that a film is eventually going to end defeat the whole purpose of its existence? Not believing in God or afterlife does not mean that the Atheists have no purpose in life — they find meaning in personal growth, experiences, relationships, creativity, and contributing to the society as humans within their lifetime (on Earth, of course).

7: Atheists Hate Religious People (Ahem! Ahem!)

Definitely not. They rather envy religious people for knowing it all. Atheism is simply based on saying “I don’t trust you” on someone’s huge, life-changing claim without evidence — and this has nothing to do with any personal grudge against believers. Many atheists maintain distance from irrationality, yet coexist peacefully with believers, and some even grew up in religious households. Disagreeing with religious fundamentals does not mean hating those who follow them, as long as they do not forcefully impose their faith upon the rest.

8: Atheism is a Religion Too

Not another one! Some people are argue that atheism is just another belief system, like a religion is. However, this is an untrue speculation considering that atheism has no sacred texts, holy books, rituals or commandments and rather stands for free will on how people want to lead their lives. Therefore, this is one more myth about atheists which needs to be clarified to the world.

Atheists, as a whole have long been misunderstood, often painted with broad and inaccurate strokes. From the false assumption that they lack morality to the thought that they secretly believe in God but just hate him, these are some myths which stem from deep-rooted societal biases rather than absolute reality. The truth, however, is that atheists lead meaningful, ethical, and purpose-driven lives without having to rely on any fundamental or religious frameworks. They do not lack values, they don’t “hate” God, and they certainly don’t form a religion of their own. Instead, they seek satisfaction in logic, philosophy, creativity, and human connection, proving that morality, purpose, or even happiness are all natural qualities and are certainly not exclusive to having faith in any religion.

It is the right time to move beyond these misconceptions about nonbelievers, and recognize that being an atheist is simply one way of looking at the world (equally holy) that values reasoning, skepticism, and the presence of evidence over faith.
