The body does not distinguish between the end of a relationship and a threat to survival. It treats both as loss of something it needed to continue.
In the weeks after, cortisol stays elevated. Appetite regulation breaks down. Immune function drops. Women, research consistently shows, tend to experience the physical symptoms of grief more acutely in the short term, the nausea, the chest pain, the inability to concentrate on a sentence. This is not fragility. It is the body reporting accurately on what it lost.
Why the craving comes back at 2am
The opioid system is involved in social attachment. The same endogenous opioids, the brain's own pain-relief chemicals, that release during physical touch and emotional closeness are withdrawn when a bond breaks. Jaak Panksepp, the neuroscientist who spent decades mapping mammalian emotional systems, found that social separation activates the same brain circuits as opioid withdrawal in animal models. The longing you feel is not romantic weakness. It is your opioid system registering a deficit.
This is why the craving spikes at specific moments. Late at night, when the nervous system is no longer distracted. When a song plays that belonged to a particular evening. When you pass a restaurant where you once sat across from him and felt, briefly, that everything would be fine. The brain has encoded those contexts as cues, the same way a person in recovery from substance use finds certain places, smells, or times of day unbearably difficult. The cue triggers the craving before the conscious mind has a chance to intervene.
You reach for your phone. You draft a message you don't send. You look at his profile until the wanting gets so large it almost feels like having him back. It isn't weakness. It is a withdrawal symptom, operating exactly as withdrawal symptoms do.
The part that takes longest to name
Grief after a relationship is not only about the person. It is about the version of yourself that existed inside that relationship, the one who had somewhere to be on Sunday mornings, who had a person to call when something small and funny happened, who had a future that was arranged a certain way. The brain slowly recalibrates its dopamine baseline. The opioid system restores its equilibrium. Cortisol levels return to normal as the stress response gets the signal that the emergency has passed.
None of this happens because you decide it should. It happens because the body, given time and the absence of repeated exposure to the cue, recalibrates on its own. This is why contact with an ex during the withdrawal phase resets the clock, not because of what was said or felt, but because the cue was reintroduced before the system had finished adjusting.
The craving is not evidence that you should go back. It is evidence that the attachment was real, that the neurochemistry was genuine, that your body did exactly what bodies do when they organise themselves around another person and then lose them. You were not foolish for feeling it. You were biological.
