Gaganyaan Explained: How India's ISRO Plans to Send Its First Crew of Astronauts to Space

India is preparing to send its own astronauts to space aboard the Gaganyaan spacecraft, a mission that would make ISRO only the fourth space agency in history to achieve crewed orbital flight. Here is what the mission actually involves, who is going, what the robot Vyommitra has already done up there, and when a human crew is expected to follow.

The Number That Puts Everything in Perspective

Only three countries have ever launched a human being into orbit under their own power: the Soviet Union in 1961, the United States in 1962, and China in 2003. Every other nation that has sent an astronaut to space did so aboard someone else's rocket. India is attempting to join that list of three, and do it with a budget that NASA spends on a single planetary probe.


The Gaganyaan programme, sanctioned by the Indian government in 2018 with an initial budget of approximately ₹10,000 crore, is ISRO's crewed spaceflight programme. The name comes from the Sanskrit word for sky vessel. The spacecraft it describes is a three-module system: an orbital module where the crew lives and works, a service module that carries propulsion and power systems, and a crew escape system that can pull the capsule away from a failing rocket in under two seconds. That last system is not decorative, it is the reason the mission can be called safe enough to carry humans.

What Vyommitra Has Already Done

Before any person boards Gaganyaan, ISRO sent a humanoid robot named Vyommitra, a portmanteau of the Sanskrit words for space and friend. Vyommitra is not a toy or a publicity exercise. She is a half-humanoid robot designed to operate the spacecraft's control panels, monitor cabin conditions, and simulate the physiological responses a human crew would experience during launch, microgravity, and re-entry. She can respond to voice commands and report system status in real time.


The uncrewed test flights are sequenced deliberately. ISRO conducted the first Test Vehicle Abort Mission, TV-D1, in October 2023, successfully demonstrating the crew escape system at an altitude of about 17 kilometres off the Sriharikota coast. The capsule separated cleanly, deployed its parachutes, and splashed down in the Bay of Bengal. A second abort test and at least two uncrewed orbital missions carrying Vyommitra are planned before any human goes up. The logic is straightforward: every failure mode the robot encounters is one a person does not have to.

Who the Astronauts Are

ISRO selected four Indian Air Force pilots for Gaganyaan training: Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap, and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla. All four trained at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia between 2020 and 2021, completing modules in spacecraft systems, spacewalk procedures, and survival training.


Shubhanshu Shukla has since been selected for a separate mission, Axiom Mission 4, aboard the International Space Station, scheduled to launch in 2025. That mission, run by the private company Axiom Space using a SpaceX Falcon 9, will give Shukla orbital experience before the Gaganyaan crew flight. The remaining three continue training at ISRO's astronaut training facility in Bengaluru, which includes a human centrifuge capable of simulating the 3.5-G load a crew will feel during ascent.

The Launch Vehicle and the Timeline

Gaganyaan will ride the LVM3, formerly called GSLV Mk III, the heaviest rocket in ISRO's current fleet. LVM3 has successfully launched Chandrayaan-2 and placed the OneWeb satellite constellation into orbit. For crewed flight, it has been modified with a new engine ignition sequence and additional redundancy in its control systems. The rocket will lift off from the Second Launch Pad at Sriharikota, on the Andhra Pradesh coast.



The crewed mission is currently targeted for no earlier than 2026, contingent on the outcomes of the uncrewed flights. The orbital mission will last approximately three days, with the crew orbiting Earth at an altitude of roughly 400 kilometres, the same altitude as the International Space Station. Re-entry and splashdown are planned for the Arabian Sea, where the Indian Navy will conduct recovery operations.


A post-Gaganyaan roadmap exists on paper: ISRO has outlined plans for an Indian space station by 2035 and a crewed lunar mission by 2040. Those are planning horizons, not commitments with hardware behind them. The crewed orbital flight is the one with a rocket, a capsule, and four trained pilots.

Why This Matters Beyond the Flag-Planting

Crewed spaceflight forces a country to solve problems that unmanned missions can tolerate failing: life support, radiation shielding, psychological isolation, medical emergencies 400 kilometres from the nearest hospital. Every system has to work. The engineering disciplines required, closed-loop environmental control, human-rated propulsion, abort systems that function in milliseconds, do not exist in India's space sector at scale yet. Building them for Gaganyaan builds them for everything that comes after.



Rakesh Sharma flew to the Soviet Salyut 7 station in 1984 aboard a Soviet Soyuz rocket. He remains the only Indian citizen to have reached space. When Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked him what India looked like from up there, he said: saare jahan se accha. Better than all the world. The next Indian to look down will get there on an Indian rocket, from Indian soil, in a capsule built in Bengaluru. That gap, forty years between Sharma's flight and Gaganyaan, is the actual measure of what this programme is closing.
