More satellites are orbiting Earth today than in the entire first four decades of the space age combined. From GPS to weather forecasting to reconnaissance, each category of spacecraft serves a distinct purpose, and India's ISRO is now a serious player in nearly all of them. Here is what is actually up there.
The Number Is Bigger Than Most People Expect
Low Earth orbit (LEO), which runs from about 160 km to 2,000 km above the surface, holds the densest population. Medium Earth orbit (MEO) sits between 2,000 km and 35,786 km. Geostationary orbit (GEO), at exactly 35,786 km, is where a satellite moves at the same speed as Earth's rotation and appears fixed over one spot on the ground. Each altitude band has a different job.
Communication Satellites: The Backbone of Everything You Use
The newer model is constellations in LEO. Starlink, OneWeb, and Amazon's Project Kuiper are placing thousands of smaller satellites at low altitudes to deliver low-latency internet to areas that GEO satellites serve poorly, high latitudes, remote terrain, and regions like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands where terrestrial fibre is impractical.
Navigation Satellites: GPS Is Only One of Five Systems
Navigation satellites orbit in MEO, typically around 20,000 km, because that altitude gives each spacecraft a wide enough view to be visible from multiple points on the ground simultaneously. A GPS receiver on your phone is triangulating signals from at least four satellites at any moment.
Earth Observation and Weather Satellites: The Eyes That Never Blink
Weather satellites divide into two types. Geostationary weather satellites, like ISRO's INSAT-3D and INSAT-3DR, hover over a fixed region and provide continuous imagery every 15 to 30 minutes. This is the data that feeds the India Meteorological Department's cyclone tracking. Polar-orbiting weather satellites, by contrast, sweep the entire planet every 12 hours, building a global picture that geostationary birds cannot provide because they only see their fixed slice of Earth.
ISRO's Cartosat series handles high-resolution land imaging. Resourcesat monitors agriculture and forests. Oceansat watches sea surface temperatures and chlorophyll concentration, data that fishing communities along India's coasts use to locate productive waters.
Scientific and Reconnaissance Spacecraft: The Satellites Nobody Advertises
Reconnaissance satellites are real, numerous, and almost never officially described in detail. The United States, China, Russia, India, France, and Israel all operate them. India's RISAT series uses radar imaging for surveillance in all weather conditions. These spacecraft do not appear on commercial tracking databases with their true capabilities listed. Their orbits are known; their sensor specifications are not.
The number sitting overhead right now, across all these categories, is not a ceiling. With Gaganyaan preparing to carry Indian astronauts to orbit and a second-generation NavIC constellation in planning, the count will keep climbing. Every object up there was placed with a specific purpose, and the debris field growing around them is the one category nobody intended to create.
