The Moon's farside has faced away from Earth for over four billion years, and the lunar terrain there looks nothing like the side we know. Thicker crust, almost no dark basalt plains, and a crater record that reads like a collision archive, here is what spacecraft have revealed about the Moon's hidden half.
The Moon Is Locked, and Has Been Since Before Life Existed on Earth
The nearside is marked by large dark patches called maria, Latin for seas, named by early astronomers who mistook them for water. These are ancient lava plains, formed when asteroid impacts punched through the crust and magma flooded the basins. The farside has almost none of them. Over 30 percent of the nearside is covered in maria. On the farside, that figure drops to roughly 2 percent. The Moon is not symmetric, and the reason why remains one of planetary science's genuinely open questions.
A Crust That Is Kilometres Thicker, and Nobody Is Entirely Sure Why
A competing hypothesis involves a second, smaller moon that once orbited Earth alongside our current one. In this model, the two moons eventually collided slowly, more of an accretion than a crash, and the smaller body's material piled onto what became the farside, thickening it. Neither explanation has been definitively confirmed. The GRAIL data narrowed the field, but the asymmetry of the Moon is still a live scientific debate.

China's Chang'e 4 mission landed inside this basin in January 2019, the first spacecraft ever to land on the farside. Its Yutu-2 rover has been operating there since, sending back data about the regolith composition and detecting what appears to be mantle material at the surface. The mission required a relay satellite, Queqiao, positioned beyond the Moon to bounce signals back to Earth, because the farside has no line of sight to our planet.

ISRO's planned Chandrayaan-4 mission is designed to return lunar samples to Earth, a capability that would give Indian scientists direct access to Moon material for laboratory analysis, the kind of work that could finally settle questions about the basin's mantle excavation.
No Maria, More Craters, and a Surface That Has Not Changed in Billions of Years
The farside also sits in a radio-quiet zone. Earth's constant electromagnetic noise, from satellites, broadcast towers, every device transmitting a signal, cannot reach it. Radio astronomers have long wanted to place a telescope on the farside for exactly this reason: it would be the quietest radio observatory in the solar system, able to detect signals from the early universe that are drowned out everywhere else. Several space agencies, including NASA and ESA, have studied the concept. The Moon's locked rotation, the very thing that hid the farside from human eyes for all of history, turns out to be the property that makes it scientifically irreplaceable.
The farside is not the dark side, it receives sunlight for roughly two Earth weeks out of every lunar month, the same total as the nearside. The confusion comes from the fact that it is the unlit side during a full Moon, when the nearside is fully illuminated facing Earth. What it actually is, is the unseen side. And the longer spacecraft spend there, the more it becomes clear that the Moon's two faces are not variations on a theme but genuinely different worlds sharing the same body, one shaped by proximity to Earth, the other by the absence of it.
