The ISRO Scientists Behind India's Space Missions Are Heroes Who Rarely Get Recognised

India's space missions have made headlines, but the scientists who built them rarely do. The ISRO engineers behind Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan are heroes in white coats and polyester saris, and the Indian public knows their rockets better than their names.

The applause lands on the rocket, not the person

On 23 August 2023, when Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander touched down near the lunar south pole, the control room at ISRO's Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network in Bengaluru erupted. You saw the footage. Grown scientists weeping, embracing, some with their hands pressed to their faces. What you probably didn't register, in the blur of that moment, was most of their names.
The mission was everywhere. The scientists were not. Newspapers ran the image of S. Somanath, ISRO's chairman, but the woman who led the Chandrayaan-3 mission as project director, Kalpana Kalahasti, received a fraction of the coverage. Ritu Karidhal, who served as mission director and had earlier been called the Rocket Woman of India for her work on Mangalyaan, trended briefly on social media and then disappeared from the conversation. The rockets get monuments. The people who calculate their trajectories go home on the BMTC bus.

What Mangalyaan actually cost, and who paid it

India's Mars Orbiter Mission launched in November 2013 and reached Martian orbit in September 2014. The total cost was approximately 450 crore rupees, less than the production budget of the Hollywood film Gravity, which released the same year and was about space. This comparison became a popular talking point, and rightly so. What got less attention was the specific human architecture behind that number: a team that worked within constraints that would have caused most space agencies to postpone the mission entirely, and still hit the launch window on the first attempt. India remains the only country to have succeeded in a Mars mission on its first try.
The scientists who achieved this were not operating with NASA's budget or ESA's infrastructure. Many of them were women. Nandini Harinath, deputy operations director for Mangalyaan, has spoken in interviews about balancing the mission's demands with the ordinary weight of an Indian household, school runs, in-laws, the logistics of a dual-income family in a city where domestic labour is still assumed to be the woman's problem. She did not frame this as a grievance. She stated it plainly, the way you state weather. That plainness is its own kind of data.

The screen keeps looking away

Bollywood has made films about cricket matches from decades ago, about partition, about courtroom dramas, about gangsters from lanes in Mumbai that no longer exist. The number of mainstream Hindi films that have centred an ISRO scientist as a fully drawn protagonist remains small enough to count on one hand. Mission Mangal, released in 2019, came closest, and it was a reasonable film, warm and watchable. But it was also an ensemble built around Akshay Kumar, a male star playing a fictional composite character, with the women scientists positioned around him. The real Nandini Harinath watched it and said, graciously, that she was glad the mission got attention. That graciousness should not be read as endorsement of the framing.
The gap between what these scientists have done and how much screen space their actual lives have occupied is not a function of the stories being undramatic. Chandrayaan-1 discovered water molecules on the Moon in 2008. Aditya-L1, launched in September 2023, is studying the Sun from the L1 Lagrange point, sending back data on solar wind and coronal dynamics that will matter for satellite safety across the globe. Gaganyaan, India's first crewed space mission, is being prepared with a crew that includes Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla. The stories are there. The camera keeps finding the rocket instead of the face.

Why the distance persists

Part of this is structural. ISRO is a government organisation, and government organisations in India do not traditionally build personal brands around their employees. The culture inside the organisation, which you can read about in the memoirs and interviews of scientists like A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, whose Wings of Fire remains one of the few genuine windows into that world, prizes collective achievement over individual credit. This is not false modesty. It is how the institution was built, and it has produced real results. But it also means that the scientists themselves rarely advocate for their own visibility, and the media, which requires a face to put on a story, defaults to the chairman or the rocket.

There is also a subtler problem. The Indian public has been trained, across decades of popular culture, to recognise heroism in a particular shape: the cricketer, the soldier, the politician, the film star. The scientist in a lab, working a problem across months or years, does not fit the narrative grammar of the hero as it has been written for mass consumption. Heroism, in that grammar, requires a visible moment of sacrifice or triumph. Science produces those moments, a landing, a launch, a discovery, but the years of failure and revision that precede them are invisible, and the people who lived through them are invisible too.

What changes when you know their names

Tessy Thomas, known informally as the Missile Woman of India, spent decades at the Defence Research and Development Organisation working on the Agni missile programme before becoming director general of the Aeronautical Systems. She is one of the most senior women in Indian defence science. Ask a room of educated, news-reading Indians to name her, and most will draw a blank. Ask the same room to name the last three captains of the Indian cricket team and the answers will come without hesitation.
This is not an argument against cricket. It is a description of where attention has been directed, and by whom, and for what reasons. The scientists are not asking for celebrity. Most of them, by temperament and training, would find it uncomfortable. What they represent, though, the possibility of a life spent on a hard problem, in a public institution, producing something that genuinely matters, is exactly the kind of story that a young girl in Patna or Coimbatore or Silchar needs to see told with the same care and budget that goes into a biopic about a batsman.

The missions keep launching. Gaganyaan will carry Indian astronauts to orbit. Future Chandrayaan missions are in planning. Each one will produce a control room full of people whose names will briefly appear in a graphic on a news channel before the anchor moves on. The question of whether that changes is not really about ISRO. It is about what Indian storytellers decide is worth the full length of a story.
