The Universe and the Cosmos Have Been Quietly Teaching You How Small Your Problems Are
The Numbers That Should Unsettle You
The Milky Way contains somewhere between 100 and 400 billion stars. Our Sun is one of them, not a particularly large one, not centrally located, sitting about 26,000 light-years from the galactic centre on a minor spiral arm called the Orion Arm. The nearest star to our Sun, Proxima Centauri, is 4.24 light-years away. Light, travelling at roughly 300,000 kilometres per second, takes 4.24 years to cross that gap. A human lifetime, moving at any speed we have ever achieved, would not get you there.
The observable universe stretches approximately 93 billion light-years in diameter. The Milky Way is one of an estimated two trillion galaxies inside it. Two trillion. The human brain did not evolve to hold that number. It evolved to track predators across a savanna, to remember which berries were safe, to navigate a social group of roughly 150 people. The scale of the cosmos is not something we intuit. It is something we have to keep forcing ourselves to remember.
ISRO's Mangalyaan, India's Mars Orbiter Mission launched in 2013, travelled about 780 million kilometres to reach Mars. It did so on a budget of approximately ₹450 crore, less than the production cost of many Bollywood films. That number was celebrated rightly as a feat of engineering and frugality. But even that distance, 780 million kilometres, is a rounding error against the scale of the observable universe. Mars is our neighbour. It is cosmically next door. And it took seven months to reach.
What Smallness Actually Does to the Brain
There is a specific psychological state that researchers have studied under the name "awe", the feeling triggered when you encounter something that exceeds your current mental frameworks. Dacher Keltner at the University of California, Berkeley, has spent years mapping what awe does to the body and mind. His research finds that awe reliably shrinks what he calls the "self-salience network", the part of the brain most occupied with personal concerns, grievances, and social anxieties. When you stand under a genuinely dark sky and look at the Milky Way, the brain does something measurable: it quiets the loop of self-referential thought.
This is not mysticism. It is neuroscience. The problem is that most people in Indian cities, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, have not seen the Milky Way with their own eyes. Light pollution has erased it. The sky above Connaught Place or Bandra looks orange at night, not black. The stars that remain visible are the very brightest, and even those flicker weakly. The cosmos is present, but the city has muffled it.
The people who have seen it, at Ladakh's Hanle Dark Sky Reserve, or at the Rann of Kutch on a moonless night, or from a hillside in Coorg far from any town, describe a consistent experience. The self gets smaller. Not in a distressing way. In a relieving way.
The Specific Problem You Are Carrying Right Now
You are probably carrying something. A conversation that went wrong and keeps replaying. A decision you made that you cannot unmake. A relationship that is ending, or should end, or ended badly. A career that is not moving the way you planned. These are real. The pain attached to them is real. The universe being vast does not make the pain smaller in the moment you are inside it.
But perspective is not the same as dismissal. When you hold a problem against the scale of the cosmos, not as a rhetorical trick, but as a genuine act of imagination, something specific happens. The problem does not disappear. It gets located. You see it sitting in a particular life, in a particular city, on a particular planet, in a particular corner of one galaxy among two trillion. That location does not erase the problem. It changes what the problem is allowed to demand of you.
The Voyager 1 spacecraft, launched in 1977, crossed into interstellar space in 2012. In 1990, at the request of Carl Sagan, NASA turned its camera back toward the inner solar system. Earth appeared as a pale blue dot, less than a pixel wide, suspended in a beam of scattered sunlight. Sagan wrote about that image: "Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark." He was not writing to comfort anyone. He was writing to locate us accurately. That location, he believed, was itself the beginning of something, not despair, but proportion.
What the Sky Has Always Known That We Keep Forgetting
Indian astronomical tradition has been measuring the cosmos for a long time. The Aryabhatiya, written by Aryabhata in 499 CE, calculated the Earth's circumference with remarkable accuracy and described the Earth rotating on its axis centuries before European astronomy arrived at the same conclusion. The Surya Siddhanta, a classical Sanskrit astronomical text, calculated the diameter of the Earth and the distances to the Moon and Sun using methods that, while different from modern ones, reflect a sustained effort to locate the human being accurately in space.
This was not purely scientific curiosity. The Navagraha, the nine celestial bodies central to Jyotisha, placed the human life explicitly within a cosmic frame. Whether or not you accept the astrological claims, the underlying impulse is worth noting: the ancients did not think of the sky as backdrop. They thought of it as context. The human life was understood as something that happened inside a larger system, not at the centre of it.
That instinct was correct, even if the mechanism was different from what we now know. The sky is context. The problem you are carrying happened inside it.
Chandrayaan-3 landed near the lunar south pole in August 2023, making India the fourth country to achieve a soft landing on the Moon and the first to do so at that latitude. The images it sent back showed a grey, cratered surface with no atmosphere, no weather, no sound. Utterly still. The Moon is 384,400 kilometres away. It looks enormous from a rooftop in Chennai or Jaipur on a clear night. In cosmic terms, it is the distance between two rooms.
The Only Thing the Universe Is Actually Saying
The universe is not saying your problems do not matter. It has no opinion on your problems. That is the point. The cosmos does not organise itself around human suffering or human ambition. It does not punish or reward. It expands, at an accelerating rate, in every direction simultaneously, indifferent to everything happening on this pale blue dot.
That indifference is the teaching. When something is indifferent to you, you are released from performing for it. You do not have to justify your existence to a universe that is not watching. You do not have to resolve every problem before you are allowed to feel okay. The scale of the cosmos does not demand anything of you, which means the demands you are placing on yourself are coming entirely from inside the room you are standing in.
Astronaut Rakesh Sharma, India's first person in space, looked down at the subcontinent from the Salyut 7 space station in 1984. When Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked him how India looked from up there, he said: "Saare jahan se achha." The most beautiful in the world. He was moved, not diminished. The distance did not erase what he loved. It clarified it.
The problems you carry are real. The cosmos is simply showing you the room they actually fit in, and that room is considerably smaller than the one your anxiety has been renting.
