What India's Gaganyaan Astronauts Will Actually Feel During Their Mission in Orbit

Four Indian vyomanauts are preparing to ride a rocket to 400 kilometres above Earth on ISRO's Gaganyaan mission. The spacecraft will put them in orbit for up to three days, and the experience will be nothing like training. From the crush of launch G-forces to floating food and a sunrise every 90 minutes, here is what actually happens to a human body and mind up there.
The First Eight Minutes Will Be the Hardest
This phase lasts about eight minutes, the time it takes the rocket to push the Gaganyaan spacecraft through the atmosphere and into orbit. The astronauts have trained for this in centrifuges at the ISRO-affiliated Human Space Flight Centre in Bengaluru, spinning until their cardiovascular systems adapt to the load. Training helps. It does not make the actual event feel routine.
The Moment Microgravity Arrives
About 60 to 80 percent of astronauts on their first spaceflight experience space adaptation syndrome in the first 24 to 72 hours, nausea, disorientation, and sometimes vomiting, as the vestibular system tries to reconcile signals from the eyes and inner ear that no longer agree. NASA's longitudinal data from ISS crews shows the condition typically resolves on its own, but it makes the first day in orbit genuinely unpleasant. The Gaganyaan mission is planned for up to three days, which means the crew may spend a third of their time in orbit simply waiting for their bodies to adjust.
What They Will See Through the Window
The atmosphere, seen edge-on from orbit, is a thin blue line. Astronauts who have described it, Rakesh Sharma in 1984 on the Soviet Soyuz T-11, and more recently Shubhanshu Shukla during his Axiom Space mission to the ISS, consistently note that the thinness of that line is the detail that stays with them longest. All weather, all breathable air, all life, compressed into a band that looks about as thick as a coat of paint on a cricket ball.
Eating, Sleeping, and Moving in Zero Gravity
Sleep is disorienting. Without gravity, there is no natural pressure on the back that signals lying down. Astronauts on short missions often report that sleep quality drops significantly. The body's circadian rhythm also takes a hit from 16 artificial sunrises per day, which is why mission schedules are designed to keep the crew on a fixed sleep-wake cycle regardless of what the windows show.
Reentry : The Return That Hits Harder Than the Launch
The capsule is designed to splash down in the Bay of Bengal, where the Indian Navy will conduct the recovery operation. The moment the crew steps out, or is helped out, they will find that their legs have largely forgotten how to work under full gravity. Muscles that went unused in microgravity will feel the full weight of the body for the first time in days. Standing will require assistance. Walking will come back within hours, but the body's relearning is immediate and unglamorous.
The Gaganyaan mission is ISRO's first crewed orbital flight, and everything the four vyomanauts experience, from the G-load on the pad at Sriharikota to the wobble of their first steps on recovery, will feed directly into India's longer-term plans for a space station and, eventually, a lunar mission. The data their bodies generate is the mission. Every nauseous hour and disrupted sleep cycle is a data point that no uncrewed spacecraft can produce.
