Every Hindu date is a measurement, not a label. The tithi, the unit at the heart of every Panchang, is defined by a precise 12-degree angle between the Sun and Moon. As that angle grows, the date changes. As the Moon speeds up or slows down in its elliptical orbit, tithis stretch and shrink, which is why Hindu lunar calendar dates refuse to sit still.
The date is an angle
The word tithi comes from Sanskrit, and the concept appears in Vedanga Jyotisha, one of the earliest Indian astronomical texts, which was already formalising the relationship between solar and lunar positions for ritual purposes well over two thousand years ago. The system was never meant to be a rough approximation. It was meant to be exact, because the timing of a yajna or a vrat depended on it.
Why your tithi birthday moves, and sometimes disappears
This mismatch produces two phenomena that confuse anyone encountering the Panchang for the first time. The first is a kshaya tithi, a tithi that gets skipped entirely, because the Moon races through its full 12-degree arc within a single civil night, never touching a sunrise. The second is an adhika tithi, a tithi that spans two sunrises, appearing twice in the civil calendar. If your Hindu birthday falls on a kshaya tithi in a given year, the date technically does not exist that year. Families typically observe it on the preceding or following tithi, depending on regional convention.
Shukla Paksha, Krishna Paksha, and what the angle looks like in the sky
The tithis within each paksha are numbered Pratipada through Chaturdashi, with the fifteenth being Purnima or Amavasya. Ekadashi, the eleventh tithi of each fortnight, when the Sun-Moon angle sits at either 120 or 300 degrees, is observed as a fast day in Vaishnava traditions. The astronomical position is the religious occasion. The angle is the ritual.
How the Panchang calculates it, and why it still requires expertise
The expertise required is not in the arithmetic. It is in the local application. The tithi in effect at sunrise determines the civil date for most purposes. But for specific rituals, the tithi at a particular muhurta within the day is what matters. A pandit reading a Panchang is doing applied spherical astronomy, translating a sky geometry into a human schedule. The calculation behind Diwali's date each year, Amavasya of Kartik month, is the same operation: find the moment the Sun-Moon angle returns to zero in the month of Kartik, and that night is Diwali.
The astronomy inside every festival date
The festival calendar is, in this sense, a map of recurring sky geometries projected onto the year. The same angular configuration returns every year, but because the lunar month is about 29.5 days and the solar year is about 365.25 days, the two cycles drift relative to each other. An intercalary month, Adhika Maas, is inserted roughly every 32 months to keep the tithi-based festivals from sliding too far through the solar seasons. The correction is elegant: the lunar and solar systems are not abandoned in favour of each other, but held in a calculated tension.
What the tithi system reveals, when you look at it as astronomy rather than tradition, is that every Hindu date is a snapshot of where two bodies are in space relative to each other and to you. The calendar is not metaphorical about this. The angle is the date. When the Moon has moved 12 more degrees from the Sun than it had at the last tithi boundary, the date has genuinely changed, not by convention, but by geometry.
