When God Doesn’t Answer Your Prayers

This article takes a look at the emotional and spiritual turmoil of unanswered prayers. One of the main points of the article is the introduction of the notion that unanswered prayers are not a sign of God rejecting us or our desires, but that sometimes they are moments when God wants to show us other paths, wants us to grow through Him, or is even giving us a lesson in faith and understanding.

At some point in life, almost everyone has prayed for something for success, for love, for health, for a problem to go away, for life to become easier. Prayer is often a moment of hope, a conversation with something bigger than ourselves. It is where people go when they feel helpless grateful scared, or lost. However, one of the most challenging spiritual experiences for many is when it seems like their prayers are not being answered. When you have been asking the same thing over and over, and still, nothing changes. When you hope wait believe and things still don't happen the way you wanted. In those situations, people usually wonder the most difficult things: Is God really listening? Does God even care? Am I praying wrong? Why are my prayers not being answered? Unanswered prayers can cause a person's faith to waver more than anything else. It is very easy to believe when everything in life is going well, but utter silence after prayer can be perceived as rejection, loneliness, or even abandonment. Sometimes the answer is not yes, but not now, something else, or even no and each of these answers may have a reason that we do not understand immediately.

Expectations from God

Frequently, the discomfort caused by unanswered prayers arises from not the silence but the expectations. Individuals frequently pray while picturing a specific result. They want a certain job, a certain person, a certain opportunity, or a certain solution to a problem. When the exact thing does not occur, they think their prayer was disregarded. However, prayer does not necessarily mean placing an order and expecting delivery. Sometimes people want God to fix their problems immediately, to eliminate all difficulties, and to make life a smooth ride. The absence of such a scenario leads to dissatisfaction which can lead to disbelief. The issue is not that prayers are not answered all the time; sometimes the issue is that the expectations are too narrow. People often think they know what is best for them, but life at times proves them wrong. Numerous people come to the conclusion that not getting what they desired actually shielded them from something worse or took them to something better. Expectations make faith a condition - I will believe only if I get what I want. On the other hand, spirituality usually preaches faith without conditions - I will believe even if I do not understand.

Faith During Silence

The hardest kind of faith is faith in the silence. If prayer is answered, faith is easy. If everything goes your way, belief comes naturally. But if nothing changes, if doors keep closing, if life is unfair and prayers disappear into silence then faith gets truly challenged. Silence doesn't always mean absence. In many religious traditions silence is interpreted as a time of waiting, learning or growing. Just like a professor doesn't provide answers straight away during an exam, silence could be a time a person is learning patience, strength and acceptance. Many people claim their faith was strengthened not when everything was fine but when life fell apart. Silence makes a person turn inward, become strong, see life in a different way and be patient. It's hard to have faith in silence because we humans desire proof, signs and instant answers. But at times silence alone is an answer.

Maybe Answers Come in Different Forms

Occasionally, prayers do get answered, but not always in the manner that people anticipate. Those who pray tend to focus on obtaining a particular result and, in the process, overlook the other opportunities, changes, or lessons that come along with those results. For instance, a person may pray for a particular job but not get it and later discover a better opportunity in a different location. Another person may pray for a specific relationship that fails, but in the end, they meet someone more compatible. A third person may ask for the disappearance of problems but instead, they are given the strength to confront those issues. At times, the answer to a prayer is not the occurrence of a different circumstance but a changed individual more patient, more mature, more understanding, stronger than before. Therefore, the prayer was answered, but internally rather than externally. Many people only comprehend this deeper meaning after a long time when they look back and see that the prayers that seemed to be not answered were indeed blessings in disguise.

Acceptance is the key

One of the most challenging spiritual lessons is learning to accept. Acceptance however is not about surrendering or giving up trying. Acceptance is a realization that not everything in life is under our control and that sometimes things come about differently than we had planned. When prayers remain unanswered the way we want, acceptance is what enables people to move on and not be stuck in the disappointment. Without acceptance, people turn to being angry, bitter, or hopeless. On the other hand acceptance even when life is far from being perfect, people still manage to find peace. One of the reasons why acceptance is such a hard thing is that humans like control. They want their lives to follow their plans and schedules. Unfortunately, life often has a mind of its own and spirituality mostly says that we find peace not when everything goes our way, but when we learn to accept what is beyond our control. If we accept, the complaint of Why is this happening to me? gets changed into This is happening so how do I move on?

Final Note :

People may feel abandoned, upset, or in despair when God doesn't respond to their prayer requests. On the other hand, it is a fact that silence of prayers does not necessarily imply that the speaker is neglected. Very often they imply that one is required to adjust their desire. Sometimes it means that it is a time of silence and development. Sometimes the answer takes a different shape. After all, life is a matter of acceptance. Sometimes the right one is trusting and being patient. It is very simple to have faith when a prayer is granted, but actually, faith starts when answers are postponed, altered, and not very clear. A lot of people are able to see in retrospect that some of their major blessings were, in fact, their unanswered prayers. It could be that what constitutes faith is not receiving 100% of what we request for, but having faith that no matter what happens, it happens for a reason - even if we get to know that reason only very much later. And, maybe unanswered prayers are not faith's demise; rather faith of another kind is born, a one that does not depend on results but on trust.
