India hands your camera problems no studio can simulate, flat white salt, black-sky monsoon, altitude haze, backlit temples at noon. These seven landscapes don't reward automatic settings. They reward photographers who understand light, exposure, and the specific way each terrain breaks a sensor. Here's what each location actually demands from your gear and your eye.

Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, White That Blinds Every Meter

The Rann is the hardest metering problem in Indian photography. At full day, the salt flat returns so much light that your camera's evaluative meter exposes for a mid-grey scene that doesn't exist, and you get a blown, textureless white. Shoot here and your histogram will lie to you until you learn to read it differently. Expose to the right: dial in +1.3 to +1.7 stops of positive compensation in the morning, then pull back in post to recover the salt's surface detail. Polarising filters cut the glare but also kill the shimmer that makes the Rann worth shooting. Decide which you want before you attach one. The Rann during the full-moon nights of the Rann Utsav festival is a different problem entirely, long exposures on the white surface with a moon overhead will clip highlights faster than midday sun. Bracket every shot.

Ladakh, Altitude, Contrast, and a Sky That Has No Business Being That Blue

At 3,500 metres and above, the atmosphere is thin enough that UV radiation hits your sensor differently. Without a UV filter, shots at Pangong Lake or the Nubra Valley come back with a faint blue cast in the shadows that no white balance preset corrects cleanly. The contrast ratio between Ladakh's sunlit rock faces and their own shadows routinely exceeds 12 stops, more than most APS-C sensors can hold in a single frame. HDR bracketing is not a stylistic choice here; it is the only way to hold both the monastery wall and the sky behind it in the same image without sacrificing one. Shoot golden hour from the monastery side, not the lake side, the Himalayas behind you catch the warmth while the water goes silver, and you get a scene that doesn't require any compositing to look real.

Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, Meghalaya, Shooting in the Wettest Light on Earth

These two towns compete for the title of highest annual rainfall on the planet. For photography, that means one thing: your camera is always one wrong move from a water-damaged sensor, and the light is almost always overcast, diffuse, and flat in a way that makes beginners reach for the saturation slider. Resist it. The soft monsoon light in the Khasi Hills is the best possible light for shooting the living root bridges, it wraps around the roots without casting hard shadows, and the greens read at their full depth without blowing out. Use a circular polariser to cut the water reflection on wet stone, and shoot at ISO 400 rather than auto-ISO, which will push too high in the canopy shade and introduce noise into the shadow detail. Weatherproof your body. A dry bag for your second body is not optional.

Varanasi Ghats at Dawn, Backlight, Fog, and Subjects Who Won't Wait

The ghats at dawn give you roughly 25 minutes of usable light before the scene changes completely. The sun rises directly behind the ghats from a boat on the Ganga, which means every human subject is in silhouette unless you use fill flash, and flash at the ghats reads as intrusive and disrespectful. Learn to expose for the sky and let the figures go dark, or expose for the figures and blow the sky, then decide in editing which image you actually made. The fog that sits on the river between November and February adds a layer of diffusion that compresses the tonal range and makes the scene look painted. That's not a flaw to correct. It's the actual light of Varanasi in winter. A 70 to 200mm from a boat lets you compress the ghats, stack the layers of pilgrims, priests, and smoke, and keep a respectful distance from private rituals.

Coorg, Karnataka, Green Overload and the Problem of Dynamic Range in Forest Light

Coffee estates in Coorg present a specific exposure challenge: patches of direct sunlight punching through the canopy onto a forest floor that is otherwise in deep shade. The difference between the lit patch and the shadow can be 8 to 10 stops. Expose for the highlights and the shade goes black. Expose for the shade and the lit patch turns into a white void. The solution most working photographers use here is to shoot only in the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset, when the light angle is low enough that the canopy diffuses it before it hits the ground. Midday in Coorg is a write-off for forest interiors. The mist that sits in the valleys each morning is gone by 9 a.m., if you're not out before then, you missed it.

Thar Desert, Rajasthan, Sand, Heat Shimmer, and Lenses That Fog From the Inside

The Thar in summer generates heat shimmer that starts at ground level by 10 a.m. Long focal lengths, anything above 200mm, will show the shimmer as a visible wave distortion across the lower third of the frame. This is not a lens defect. It's physics. Shoot the dunes early and compress them with a long lens before the air heats up. The bigger problem in the Thar is thermal shock: bringing a cold camera bag from an air-conditioned vehicle into 45-degree heat causes condensation to form on the inside of the lens elements. Leave your camera in the bag with the bag partially open for 15 minutes before shooting. The sand itself is the other threat, Rajasthan's fine desert sand gets into zoom mechanisms and aperture blades faster than beach sand, because the grains are smaller. A lens with a weather seal is worth the weight.

Sundarbans, West Bengal, Low Light, Moving Subjects, and a Background That Never Sits Still

The mangrove delta at the mouth of the Ganga is one of the most technically difficult wildlife environments in India. You are always shooting from a moving boat toward a moving subject, a spotted deer, a saltwater crocodile, occasionally a Royal Bengal tiger at the waterline, against a background of mangrove roots that are also moving in the tidal current. The light under the canopy is low and green-shifted. Auto white balance will overcorrect and give you a magenta cast. Set a manual Kelvin temperature of around 5500K and adjust from there. Continuous autofocus with subject tracking is essential; the camera needs to be locked onto the animal, not the reeds behind it. Shoot at 1/1000s minimum to freeze motion from both the boat and the subject. The Sundarbans rewards patience more than any other location on this list, you will wait two hours for a 30-second window, and the camera settings need to already be right when it opens.
